I was wondering the same thing. It could be a case where the Feds wait for the State action to play out, and if it's nullified by a sympathetic jury they might step in.

The feds rarely try murders if they have not been involved with an investigation and cooperators before the murder was committed. Most state prosecutors are capable and skilled so the feds can leave them in state court and know they will get the max there and save the money. But there is always that dual jurisdiction reality which gives them another bite at the apple of the state can't get the results.
