He's drawing trump out. He's forcing trump to state his position on masks very clearly in a time where there is no good reason not to wear a mask. This is a referendum on his Covid leadership. As an added benefit, Biden gets to shame Texas and Florida governors for not requiring it and prove that trump hates states' rights for those who do. Trump is being played.

Why not just protect the vulnerable? Over 40% of deaths have been in nursing homes. Think about that. Not people in a certain age group but older people in nursing homes account for over 40%. Wear the masks but at some point we have to come to the realization that everyone is not equally at risk if we want to get this thing under control. Wearing a mask might be seen as a nice thing to do but making at-risk people feel like they are safe to shop at Publix, Sam's club, Target, etc as long as people are wearing masks isn't nice.

Everyone is vulnerable. Even if you recover permanent damage is not uncommon.

Sniper, you seem to be relying on the dated information that most people who get it will recover and be fine. Most will be asymptomatic. That's just not true. Vulnerable is a definition that keeps expanding.

JB, that isn't true. As of late July, 80% of the deaths attributed to Coronavirus were for people over 65 years old. 0.1% of the deaths were under 17 years old.

Of 1,500 people who were studied who were experiencing long-term effects after Coronavirus, such as lung-scarring, only 12.5% of those effects lasted longer than 4 months.

Everyone IS NOT equally at risk.

Pretty much everyone is wearing masks but I'm seeing a lot of obese old people walking around like everything is cool because people have masks on. For someone in their twenties, that's fine. For someone who is over 65 years old, obese, and using a walker shopping at peak hours of the day in crowded stores. It isn't. You can't tell me these two people are equally at risk.

If everyone unmasks and everything goes back to normal, herd immunity requires 80% infection.

That's 1,280,000 deaths if the virus has a .5 kill rate.

A land hurricane devastated a chunk of the US Heartland. Two days later Trump cut methane regulations.

And you are worried about wearing a piece of cloth over your faces during a pandemic?

AHHHHH, so your approach is to have everyone continue wearing the masks and not ask the old people with pre-existing conditions to change anything about their lifestyles or shopping habits, etc. The masks are just supposed to make all those who are at-risk feel like they the masks are going to save them and they have nothing to worry about as long as everyone is wearing masks. You guys are doing a real service to your fellow man. Doing the lord's work out there I tell you.

I get that you guys think masks will solve this whole thing but plenty of people have died who were adamant about wearing masks throughout this whole thing. Try to put the mask issue aside for just one tiny second and think about what we can do besides covering our faces that could also prevent deaths. The fact that over 40% of the people who have died from coronavirus have been in nursing homes, the fact that 80% of the coronavirus deaths are over 65 years old, and the fact that just under 90% of the deaths over 65 years old have had a very specific list of pre-existing conditions should give you a raging clue.

Where did the people who died catch the virus? A young person that was taking care of them or other old people?

>> Keep at it Q's and we will never recover from this nightmare pandemic. << theglide. That's the exact right answer. The motivation for the ceaseless questions is to stop the current solution with the attack that it's not based upon proof, reason or documented science. It's this artificial position that pretends "the science" proves that masks don't work, we don't know the long term effects and we don't have studies. This need for certainty is not the quest of a scientific mind's need to refine, to purify and to really know something as a fact. It's a cynical effort to undermine any conclusion as suspect and to cast doubt on every piece of information as a partisan's opinion. It's attacking the science by attacking every scientist and doing so with a false identity of a science, evidence based background. The goal is to justify the castrated inertia of the current regime and use their enemies weapons on them. It's not a real question. It's an endless series of questions that the likes of snippy makes to to be able you don't really know any better than anyone else so your guess is nothing more than an opinion. A partisan opinion. Q.E.D.

What if it takes years to create a vaccine? Everyone is wearing masks and people are still dying. I am not telling anyone not to wear a f'ing mask but at some point, we need to stop focusing on making people comply with wearing masks and start trying to figure out what else we can do to scale back the death toll. I'm not saying don't wear the mask. Not sure how many times I've said that. Some people need to start focusing more on the real problem and less on just focusing anger at people who won't do what you want them to do. This thing kills old people with pre-existing conditions. What are we doing about that? If you expect 80% of the population to put the brakes on life for a few years until we figure it out then that ain't a winning strategy.

Here's something to think about..

COVID has so far affected approximately 8% of the US population.

Herd Immunity requires 75-80% infection (in other words- most people need to get infected and whatever happens to them after that, including death/permanent damage)

We are a big pile of dry kindling sitting in the woods, with a small flame waiting to reach us and turn into a massive forest fire.

What has happened so far is absolutely nothing compared to what could be waiting for us. Soooooo far from over.
