Yup, bad training and bad decisions all around. If you pop out your door in an aggressive manner with gun in hand, regardless of where you are pointing it, you can expect retaliation.

The woulda couldas:

Don't open the door. He said he was having people walking around there at night causing trouble. If this is the case, hang back with your gun, call the police and let them know you are armed.

If you do go to the door, ask who it is FFS. This could have saved his own life. But instead he wanted to be the "good guy with the gun" and then got mowed down by poorly trained and trigger happy cops.

Guns do no de-escalate situations. They only make them worse unless you have the proper self control.

Rule #1: Ask yourself- "How would Mike handle this?"
