As far as "taking care of business,,, in our own way" - while I know you're suggesting personal use of violence against some perceived threat, your statement is literally correct.

In the community we would protect each other as needed if there were some threat. But most property crime is the result of poverty and extreme inequality. If that were eliminated, "crime" would be mostly domestic violence and settling disputes between citizens. That could be managed by people trained in deescalation and restorative justice. The police today have in many cases become a full blown military occupation force, with most of the police living outside the communities they are supposed to serve, and many of them embracing "warrior class/punisher" mentality. Open any gun magazine from the last 5 years. It's full of bald, Oakley shades, hotdog necked white guys in tactical pants sporting the latest red, white and blue AR and night vision goggles. It's a huge LARP culture.

I agree that they have gone too far in militarizing. That should be dialed back a bit, IMO. Needs to be some of that so they can out gun well armed drug gangs, etc. But it seems that we're beyond that point. On the bigger issue - getting rid of police forces entirely - I could agree to that as long as it's limited to prog cities.

What I'm talking about is re-thinking our whole approach to public safety. The police forces today are more or less customer service for wealthy white people. They are there to defend accumulated wealth and keep the poor from organizing any resistance to the cultural hegemony.
