Well, , , , it certainly MUST be SOMETHING and otherwise has to have been "contrived".

It is taking so much attention away from Trump, , , , , and, , , , the Dem primary candidates!!!!

Needs a sexier name. For example, corona virus 229e is known as "The Cold". Now that's chilling.

The second case of coronavirus in Washington State is a teenager who went to be tested for flu, and was unaware that he was also being tested for the novel coronavirus. Genetic similarities to the first case in Washington suggest that 150-1,500 more people may have been infected. Of course no other cases have been detected so far, but there hasn't been much testing. (NY Times, Sunday morning).

Please, please, explain to me why any sane person would go on a cruise right now, given the current state-of-afairs?

>>>. Among the 2,400 passengers stranded off the California coast on a cruise ship carrying at least 21 people infected with coronavirus, few people aboard likely have more to lose than Kari Kolstoe, a retiree from North Dakota with stage-4 cancer.

Kolstoe, 60, said she and her husband, Paul, 61, had looked forward to the Grand Princess cruise to Hawaii as a brief, badly needed respite from the grind of medical intervention she has endured for the past 18 months. <<<

This woman is now upset about missing next week's chemo, , , , ,!!!???!!!

What's more: "We've not yet seen an epidemic or pandemic in our lifetimes of this size and scope," said Becca Bartles, the executive director of infectious disease prevention at Providence St. Joseph Health System. "We're gearing up for something extremely significant."

There is a blog from a 25 year old in China that went through the sickness and I do NOT want to catch this thing. It sounds like getting on a bus while you have a bad case of the flu and the bus hits a wall. Nope!

In the US, it's getting down to questions of whether closing schools is really a good idea (lots of parents can't look after kids during school hours) and how to get people to self-isolate. The Italian shutdown probably isn't possible here.

closing schools would be more important to slow spread among parents than protecting kids. this virus hardly effects them for the most part

But, , , , , the kids do get it and can pass-it-on just as easily as anyone else. Problem being is that the parents will go to work and the grand parents will watch the kids!!! "Grandpa got sick and died!"

Two cases in Florida: Sarasota (Doctors Hospital) and Hillsborough County. People who were in contact with the patients are being tested. The governor has declared an emergency. The CDC is having trouble with testing, so the US is slow to do it on a large scale.

Riddle,

No, not really.

The current, nominal, death rate from our "flu" is only .1%. Out of 1000 cases, only 1 person is "expected" to die.

Now, this COVID-19 is a different animal. It has really only started and, as such, a lot of its "numbers" will be revised but, it is currently projected that its "nominal" death rate is 3.4%. Out 1000 cases, 34 people are "expected" to die. Lots, lots, lots, worse that the "flu" (340% more!). Who in your neighborhood do you want to do without?

Riddle, yes, I understand but, any "mention" of the flu at this point only feeds into the "COVID-19 is No Big Deal" problem, , , , as those in DC seem to want!!

At this time everything might "work out" with "minimal" total effects. BUT, we could be seeing Only The Tip Of The Iceberg and everything could begin to get TERRIBLE soon.

I'm pretty sure that I'd have to say "Fuck the DOW" and fuck the immediate ideas of "helping" big business right now! WE MUST rapidly increase the funding of the CDC and NIH.!!!!

Take a good look at the reports coming out of Italy this morning. Welcome to Thunder Dome!!!

i understand your point. as someone who had a family member die from the flu, my point is simply that it shouldn't be ignored because of the new kid on the block. people are doing that, i know first hand

The "hoax" stuff belongs in the Other Forum.
The lack of testing in the US is due to fussy FDA requirements combined, it seems, with CDC having problems with assembling and distributing test kits. That's being addressed, but valuable time has been lost. Chinese statistics on the epidemic are probably pretty good. Our appearance of having only a few cases may be a matter of lack of testing, though if it were widespread in the US, more people with obvious symptoms would be showing up. Best guess seems to be that we don't have too many cases. The new case in Washington State has died.
The NY Times reports that caregivers for the elderly in Japan are doing everything they can to keep the virus away. Twenty nine percent of the Japanese population is over 65. The virus is a huge risk for the country.
