JB : Been going down since the late 80s , when it was supposed to be a cesspool of crime .Amazing how much Punta Roca has changed , with all the infrastructure and an actual road in . We always had to hoof it on foot in the early morning sun. Same with Sunzal --- now an international surf contest venue . Who would of thunk ?

I went down in 2000 and stayed with bob rotherham. His son Jimmy picked us up at the airport. He was still in his teens and the best surfer in the country. Jimmy just dropped me off at the airport last night. We stayed at bob rotherham's "Punta Roca Surf Resort" in playa conchal about 2 miles from punta Roca. Bob is 74, he's old and tired but he surfed last week. That's pretty cool. There are new highways and a park at the point but it's still such an amazing wave. I've got cuts all over my feet from getting in and out on the rocks, bruises from duck dives that almost worked and cut on my brow from when I popped up too quick after being held down too long but man I got some bombs. Not bad for a guy in his fifties.

RE : bob rotherham's "Punta Roca Surf Resort" ----Roger that , know both father and son ( knew Jimmy from WAY before he was sponsored by Quicksilver )and spent more then countless times down there , and a little extra week over at Los Flores and a tad bit of Punta Mangos and you have had an excellent stay. Shack City ! The very early days, for me was around 1988 ?? ( Prior to that there was ... only Bobs 1st 2 story mini hotel venture and restaurant and several very other sketchy local hotels in the hart of La Libatrad .-----crime was not nearly as prevalent as the grape vine stories suggest, ) still you needed to be aware of your surroundings and like a cat , always sleep with One eye open . Got to surf Roca AND Flores countless times before the eternal " Cluster Fuck " crowds of today ! JB : What was the crowd factor currently like ?------should have not only been reduced significantly at the larger size factor , but also more spread out take off zones as well ?------ ---looks like you scored BIG TIME ! I love it when it is Full on " MACKING " I am truly jealous you lucky Bastard.!

Glad you scored. Certainly a regular footer paradise. Looks crowded compared to what I used to see. Such is progress.

There were crowds but you all know how sometimes you can see 40 guys in the water and after an hour you see only maybe half that with a board big enough to get in, being in the right place and actually getting that wave. I was averaging about two waves per hour and they were not short rides. One I got all the way to La Paz. The paddle back was long and hard. That added to the general fatigue of surfing two or three times a day and sometimes getting pummeled on a duck that was so close. Also, maybe age. Still though, it was an amazing wave.
