Not an exciting day, but some excellent riders were performing on quality waves, ones that don't look like freaks, and in fact could have been from Sebastian Inlet, once upon a time. A good how-to video, especially for bodyboarders.
The formidable Craig Whetter was on a white top/purple bottom board (blond hair). He really shows the value of speed.
I was enjoying the show, live, thanks to a cheap air fare on short notice. I'd lugged my camera equipment (21 pound bag) but the camera body's shutter got stuck. Impressed by the people at the Wedge. Lots of young bodysurfers. I suspect Yucca Fins has helped boost the idea that fins make for fun at the beach. Yuccas everywhere. This visit was almost exactly two years after my photo visit on bigger days. Was happy to hear that a Wedge lifeguard who'd gotten a commendation for his friendly educational handling of a rip current situation (for once, I made a little accidental video that did good), is back for the summer and is doing lifeguard boat duty.
I knew lots of extremely fit and skilled people (lived in a dorm popular with athletes at Penn State, which did NOT have an athletic dorm, did weekends with outdoor recreation majors, and later in Wyoming, was awed by the Hotshot fire crew attached to our office, and so on). Newport's water people are great fun to watch and be dazzled by.

Dingpatch, it's painful to watch some big-day Wedge videos. I watched, in person, a horrific broken leg from a simple mistake, a hard landing on one foot, 6' wave. But drownings are very rare even if there's lots of injuries. I think of comparisons to rock climbing, trail bicycling, whitewater kayaking, or even kiteboarding (death by irate shark while kiteboarding was extraordinary, but actually happened south of us). Craig Whetter, the bodyboarder, thinks Wedge is a great wave. Not a freak show.

How many started in the water on nipple erasers in the 50's and early 60's?

Me for one. I tried to surf everything including truck inner tubes from PAFB dump. Long stems made it even more hazardous. Never could catch a wave on them except to go over the falls while it folded in half, but it was still fun. Nipples were also a casualty.

Crash Boat Beach near Ramey AFB, whose runway now is Aguadilla Airport. Closeout shorebreak, but middle school kids were believed to be made of cartilage, so relatively break resistant. Plenty of small orange inflatable life rafts.

The only unexpected thing about surfing The Wedge, is coming out unscathed.
