Here is the link Florida today article

Thanks for the news. Sorry to hear that. :-(

I helped saved a guy last week at PAFB. Sucked off the sandbar from knee deep to over his head. I was glad a couple other surfers helped while I got him on to a foamie to get him to shore.
He was convinced he was going to die.
He was going to lunch later for his mothers 87 birthday.
I hope he made it to see her and had no further issues. His friend took him home but I know his heart got a run for its money.

And Sunday at paradise some surfers and life guards pulled out a couple teens that I had just paddle past thinking they were a little to far out on the sandbar. 2 mins later I saw the lights blazing and the commotion of them getting pulled to the beach.

I may have to start giving more friendly reminders to those frolicking with disaster.

There's an art to friendly reminders. Good lifeguard programs emphasize looking for potential problems and visiting them.

Vicious rips with the current sandbar setup. Be careful.

The National Weather Service has put a lot of work into rip current predictions. Their regular rip current statements may seem overdone, but it doesn't take much of a rip to panic the unwary. I've been at Wabasso for such a situation. The victim survived but was hospitalized.
The beaches have been moving sand back toward shore lately (no doubt to be reversed over the next week) and that makes excellent conditions for rips that for experienced beach goers will be trivial.
I caught this little rip event by dumb luck. Long telephoto lens, which compresses space.

Last weekend the rip at the beach looked like the Colorado River. Insane!
