It seems like a dive watch is not really a surf watch. They are bulky. My experience is that they are great for a year and once the battery goes, the new battery breaks the seal and eventually it leaks and there's a cloud once it hits the ac. I decided the criteria would be an automatic but that's hard because they are bulky and expensive, but they don't have batteries.

I had an invicta automatic diver. It was a copy of the silver Rolex. $100. It went a year and probably could have gone more but the pin broke when I put my hands down on my deck to belly through a fat section and popped it off. It had a Japanese automatic movement and kept reasonably good time. I replaced with a plastic luminox from Costco. $200. It was great until the battery changed. I did love the tritium night sight. It was light too. It has a condensation cloud once my wrist gets it to body temp.

After going thru many Gshock ironman, etc what usually fails is the velcro wristband, even if I replace it with The Band, eventually; set wave and there it goes..... so walmart special Armitron, all I really need to know is when it's time to catch one in.

Yep, $20, 30meter water resistant, Wally world special. When it stops or you lose it, get another. Both the nice Seiko and Citizen that my loving wife gave me are on the bottom of the sea.

I've had good success with the casio sgw-100. Has compass and thermometer, 200m resist, and under $50.00. Great dive watch too.
I did lose one when a leash wrapped my arm teaching girl to surf, though. Almost took my arm with it.
My elcheapo throwaway is the casio WS-1200H-3AVCF, cool fishing features, about $20 on amazon

I did the cheap Armitron from Amazon for a while. It dies, toss and replace. I recently decided to upgrade and went with a Nixon Regulus. I've been happy with that.

I got this with my Costco rewards check. The lightweight fabric band goes around the underside so one pin failure won't send it to oblivion. Waterproof to 1000' and automatic no battery. I was intrigued by this idea if going back in time to buy an antique before it become an antique and deciding to buy it solely on the merits. I was watching antiques roadshow and there was a guy there with a Rolex submariner that he bought for 200 in 1980 and he beat it up in normal wear and tear for four decades. It was still worth 8k. That's what I was looking for.

I lost a decent watch overboard while sailing many moons ago and since then have used whatever $20 buys for watersports where you might lose a watch.
I've been using a Casio Forester for about 15 years now and it has gone through about three battery changes. Trick is to use silicone grease on the o-ring and it stays water tight.

JB - I have some glycines...they are a damn good watch at any price point. I like both the airmen and the combat subs. I like the 46mm as it is big and clear and is a solid 300m watch, but the 42mm is what i wear more as it is a reliable EDC watch and takes a beating. Accuracy is as good or better than watches costing $4k+ with COSC. All are within +/- 5 spd. Great for a house ETA or Sellita movement.
If they came out with a Ti 42mm combat sub I'd buy it in a heartbeat. BTW - the guys on the EOD teams i work with use mostly g-shocks or glycines/other affordable swiss diver type watches/Eco-Drive divers and they beat the crap out of their watches. It is kinda fun doing a knife/watch check and see what they pull out.

The days of rolexes in the average joe's hands are over. Overpriced and good for flash, but not more accurate or durable than any other decent brand. Hard to justify laying down the Rolex tax these days when omega, tudor, etc. are all just as oood or better.

Anyway, still use my 20 buck casio for surfing
