"It would be interesting if that happened in the same week," Slater told the Associated Press of possibly retiring. "We'll see how that goes. I'm contemplating whether I stop now or really go full bore this whole year, which would be, in my eyes, really for the fans and saying goodbye to everybody after all the years of support they've given me."

No way he would stop after getting the points for a first of the season contest win. Hopefully he will kill it at sunset.

As an aside, stoked the tour isn't starting with three contests in Oz like it was.

He is quoted saying "ill be at every event this year" so no early exit. Does suck that he could win Pipe, Chopes, Gland... but regardless has to go to trestles and try to win against all the young bucks.

Ya, agree- they should end it back at Pipe waiting on another combo pulse with Backdoor involved.

The surfing competition at the Paris Olympics will be held in Tahiti, at the famed Teahupo'o break. Slater has won the World Surf League stop in Tahiti on five occasions, as part of his record-breaking 56 career championship tour victories. If he qualifies to represent the United States next year, he will be among the favourites at the heavy barrelling wave.

"I'm really hoping to qualify for it, but I need to get my butt into gear," he said. "The qualification process is going to be tough, but if I can get into the Olympics, the location the event is at in Tahiti - that wave really suits my strengths. So if I can get there I think I have a really good chance of a medal, but I think the harder part is going to be getting there, to be honest."

If he is having fun and cruising, why quit? If each loss throws him into a pit of despair, then that is a different story. Surfing is a sport for the young. I was decent at one time, and now I struggle to stand up. I went from zooming around, to failing at the most basic requirement; getting to my feet.

GOATS are a different animal. Look at Tom Brady. I'm not sure us normals can even remotely understand what drives these rare people.
