Very sad to report he has passed away, any of you Nosara travelers may have known him as he and his wife Patty ran the Gilded Iguana for a very long time.
Just one story of him, he had a fishing charter business, and he took 2 local ticos under his tutelage and after he got out of the fishing game, he gave them his boats.

Amazing guy, and quite a Cuban character form the Keys. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear that. First met Chiqui when Patty was waitressing at a bar/rest. in Nosara village (pre Gilded Iguana) and made sure to hook up with him a trip or 2 later to go fishing - great fun. Later, he would keep an eye on a lot we bought and let me know when it needed to be chopped and would hire a couple of Ticos to go in and clear all the undergrowth with machetes - all he asked was a lunch at the Iguana. Great guy and yes, a character! Via con dios, amigo!

pumphouse - Yes! Those days were special. Before Coconut Harry opened his surf shop, the first, when, if you didn't bring it with you - you did without - including wax, boards, etc. High tech was when German Peter at the Villa Taype got a fax machine to contact him for reservations...not to mention those morning sessions with 3 or 4 people out...stopping for beers while waiting for the Tempisque ferry...fun times.

Stayed there about 8 years ago for a few days - very fun waves, and reasonable good size, but not 'classic'. Don't remember him personally - sounds like a great guy.. Where did they run the fishing boats out of? Looks like the place did some updating since then.. Normally go to Playa Grande area and stay at Las Tortugas.. IMO Negra is def the best 'driveable' wave in that area, but lots of petty theft there.. Never took any 'boat rides' up north.. Pavones def on the bucket list for next trip but need to wait for the cove to go away.. The mandatory "health insurance" requirement seems like BS to me - esp if you have proof of recent vacc..
