I met John in my first event at the Easter Surfing Festival in 1979. As director of the ESA Central Florida District, we ran the amateur contest for them for many years, when I was the director and after as a competitor. He and Dick were first class contest promoters. Those were good times.

I remember in 1988 driving up with the equipment by myself and this rent-a-cop would not let me offload my truck. He wanted credentials. I had flags, horns, all the heat sheets, etc. I ripped into him. Later on John tells me in his calm southern voice, "you get more flies with sugar than with salt"!

He and Dick were great mentors.

Cool story. I remember those contest in the 80s. Wowsa...so awesome party scene. That was a pretty good Florida Today article. My wife paid for a subscription starting last week. They actually have some pretty good writers. It's a shame it is behind a pay wall.

R.I.P. John Griffin.

Dave,
Those were good times.
That contest my sidekick, Billy Mac, was in Hawaii. I think you know him and I was running solo.
That said, John and Dick were top notch, Pro east coast as I was. RIP Mr Griffin.

And, by the way speaking of pro east coast, Mr Slater could be in the Olympics due to John Florence's knee injury. Not that I wish it upon him, Ke11y was one heat win from eclipsing his ranking for the Olympics.
Go Ke11y!
