Surfy,

Actual, genuine, "Soul" has nothing to do with what you ride.

"Soul" is only found in the glide of the ride.

Even dick draggers have Soul.

Well, for many years my most favorite board had more of your kind of "soul" than you will probably ever own: 10'0"Surfboards Hawaii Nose Rider by The Genius.

Otherwise my bigger surf go-to was a 9'6" Surftech Hobie Alter Model. For bigger surf I used my 9'2" Surftech Donald Takayama DT2. For the much bigger, Monster Hole, days I rode my 8'10' CC Rider Surftech equal.

And for many years I had a piece of Holy Soul hanging in my living room; a 9'6" Hobie Alter Model 50th Anniversary Edition, singed by Hobie but, shaped by either Terry or Mark.

I agree Ding, soul isn't just making a hard to ride board work. Soul was the only choice when boards sucked.

The soul must be exercised like a muscle, but carefully and only with proper tools as if you lose it, it can be very hard to find............

One great exercise is when to extend through a bottom turn, so much that your body stretches out until your soul almost leaves it, only a few toes in the wax, maybe your hand skims the surface of the water-maybe it doesn't- but the weight of your board must act as a counter balance; only the perfect combination of weight, fin, and rail allow it to swing back up under you- and your feet reattach to the board as you drive off into space and compress that soul back where it belongs and save it for some other time .

On a pop every time you attempt to reveal the soul, you try to stretch a turn out, and boom hit a piece of chop and right before you face plant that soul jumps ship and is gone forever!

I like stokedpanda's breakdown and fully agree!

I was surfing this past Sunday at a "not to be disclosed very popular cfl break" and there was a blond chicka out there riding a yellow log RIPPING hard! On EVERY single drop in right when she got to her feet, her drop in was a "soul arched" and I was quite impressed! Even had conversation with random other longboarding lady out there with me on the south end of this spot about how amazingly SICK this chicka's style was and how it was soo "Soul-eeee".. #soularchgoals will be attained by my 45 year old frame some time in the near future!!!

The last year and a half has ground my "soul" into hot dog meat. But you know me, I can't complain...

One could argue that the soul of surfing is the person having the most fun, not necessarily the most talented. Sometimes the pressure of talent can displace ones soul....(or I'm just making excuses for not being very good)
