Coarse sand/gravel makes for a steep beach and usually not much surf. It's sheltered from bigger waves, most of the time, which also encourages steepness. When there are waves, it's shorebreak. Pearl Beach, a bit north of Sydney. For comparison, the famous Sydney beaches face the ocean directly.
Note the bigger waves much farther out

Raw Beefs, definitely. Of course on any day when this thing is operating, the major surfing beaches will be busy with big, ridable waves

What a great wave said no one.

That's more or less the point. Australia's infested with decent-to-great waves. This one actually has signs warning people not to swim when there's waves. Here's something more interesting, the Newport Wedge on a little day, entertaining the kids.
