surfermic, we had buoy reports in the 80s. Just had to listen to the radio shack weather radio cube!

Can you still call Quiet Flight and listen to the surf report on their answering machine?

The buoy reports did that globally for about 12 hours last week and then it was fixed. Programming glitch that NOAA has a single point of failure for?

No, try Oceanside. That's where I used to get mine before I could read the weather.

Yes I lived right off the beach in Hawaii. You could feel it rumbling and smell it when it was building.
I went and looked today, small. |

As per the afternoon check, there is a perfectly valid reason the buoys are reporting no swell...

9-7-6 RAAAAAGE!!!
My first stint in Hawaii in '91-''92 we listened to the weather radio buoy reports, the voice of the local guy NWS announcer was almost like hearing Neptune himself. When I went back out there for grad school in '98 NWS had switched to robot voice...it wasn't the same. BUTT...they had started the Pat Caldwell online surf forecasts which were (still are) worth their weight in sex wax. Of course, I'd see Pat around the Dept and pick his brain and pretty soon I was doing my own accurate forecasts, maybe a little better for a surfer with Pat being a windsurfer and having slightly different perspective. ------------------------- "If I say it's safe to surf this beach, captain, then it's safe to surf this beach!" |

Yes, that robot voice was annoying! Sign of the times though. Too bad NWS didn't think of Siri or Alexa voice back then!

Buoys off line: Again.... " On 03/09/2021 the NDBC primary processing servers were shut off due to a facilities issue, and to keep 2ndlight surfers in the dark about upcoming swells. We're going back to old school, if you wanna know what the waves are like, ya gotta go check it yourself. Now get back to work and stop surfing the internet. Station pages on the NDBC website are not updating and there is no ETR at this time. We will update this banner as we learn more. That is all, now back to our regularly scheduled programming." |

I heard rumor of a flood in the building that houses the servers that relay buoy info. out nationwide
------------------------- "I remember South Africa in the late 70's, sleeping on the beach at J-bay, smoking ganja with the blacks. On weekends we'd go to the pub in East London to drink beer and fight with the Afrikaners. They liked to fight, I liked to fight. It was a good time" |
