Looking to put a Minn Kota Riptide Terova on my 17ft center console. Everything I've read suggests the motor with 55LB thrust for my boat. I pretty much only fish the Inlet and am assuming that this suggestion isn't taking the strong incoming and outgoing tides of the Inlet into consideration. Any of you have this trolling motor? It would be nice to not spend the extra money for the 80LB thrust, but I'd hate to burn the 55 out battling the inlet. Thanks in advance for any help. ------------------------- R I P Mama G. @Salt.And.Savagery.Fishing @Laserwolf.Laserwolf Edited: 03/03/2019 at 07:04 AM by Long Beard |

With a strong current not much could fight it for long effectively imo but most guys fishing mayport inlet in Jax with big tides have 80 or even bigger with serious battery packs.

I have the 80 on my 19' and have ran it wide open, pushes the boat 3kts for a few hours and never used more than half my juice. I've fished the Inlet for 3-4 hrs with it on spot lock and never had any issues

Right on. Figure I'll probably only be using it on spot lock. I had to tow one of the charter captains in one night a few months ago. He was drifting the fenders on the outgoing and his motor shut down. He was trying like hell to go against the current with just his trolling motor but he wasn't getting anywhere. Sketchy situation in the dark.

That is sketchy especially in the dark. What size boat / trolling motor was he running? Slowly getting used to fishing / running the inlet myself. My boats actually 18' but I'm glad I opted for the 80 instead of 55

I'm not sure what he had on there, but it was probably at least a 21ft boat.

There's no substitute for horsepower brother. Put as big a one on it you choose to afford. Power is safety
80-103, or whatever it is, imho
