The biggest welfare system we have going on here in Brevard is the Military Industrial Complex at CCAFS, NASA et al..

Worked on the outside of the system as a consultant off base for decades on large to small projects and got to seen it first hand..

Not to mention seeing AF guys doing 'reviews' being prepped by LMC et al for future 'golden parachute' jobs within the fold..

Also grew up abroard in an oil producing nation and saw the foreign 'influence' and with corruption & bribing of local officials at work.. A couple US & other foreign firms were even succesfully 'prosecuted' ('guilty' verdicts).. Of course, and as expected, the 'Settlements' and 'fines' were a joke compared to what was actually stolen from the public purse.. Hence my references to Batista types who were responsible for putting Fidel into power, and the similar ones in Venezuela who effectively put Chavez into power - by the way through open and fair elections with overwhelming margins.. Funny what happens when poor people actually get motivated to vote..

"Socialism" is public ownership or control of the means of production. "Social programs" are a collective action by the government to ensure that certain basic needs are met. It's widely thought that the existence of an underclass leads to general social unrest, and from there to a bad economy. They thus benefit everybody, perhaps especially those with the most wealth, since they have the most to lose from a government that falters under public unrest. The risk of free riding makes this a legitimate government enterprise.

The U.S. Social Security system is a retirement program "owned" by the public and operated for the benefit of the people. The right wing has hated its socialist nature since day one, and tried to "privatize" it so their capitalist friends could steal from it.

As Hap pointed out, there are socialist parties who form governments all over the world. All this BS about Cuba and Venezuela is just red baiting. Compared to most other western nations, the USA has the worst statistics for everything that matters and they're getting worse.
