I can't believe I'm having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning.
He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift.
My heart is broken and I don't think I'll ever fully recover from this loss.
I love you so much, Pop.

NOOOOOOOOO. I wondered why my shitty classic rock station was playing the good stuff.

Only a handful of guitarists need no credits for the listener to tell who is playing the guitar parts. He was one of them. Great talent and it sounds like he was a great dad.

An original shredder has left the building.

You will never hear a cover band actually hit these licks. A truly defining song for the 80's.

I attempted guitar lessons as a kid because of Eddie.. Needless to say when I couldn't play as well as him after a month I quit!

Saw VH about a half a dozen times but I will never forget the first time. VH1 tour. Mind blown, how good is this guy? Encore ends, concert over. Alex, Michael and Dave walking off stage. But Ed just wont stop. Stands there on stage right, wailing, blistering finger taps/harmonics, bomb dropping with the wammy bar. Shredding! AL and Mike come back on stage and carry him off. Epic!

DUDE, the best VH song ever. I like your style. When Eddie died I thought about it for a while... what's the best VH song? This was it for me.

Too close to call. That's great too.

I always liked Alex as a drummer too. He also had his own sound. Great band.

theglide, agreed> Alex VH is a beast. I think he is one of the most under-rated drummers. My two favorite bands, RUSH and VH. Neil Peart passed, Eddie passed. What powers would have to align to get Alex VH to meet up and play drums with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson? Could you imagine a Rush/VH collaboration? Gets me fired up thinking about it...RusHalen!

I just stumbled upon this site for Alex Van Halen's drum kits he used. Some pretty cool early photos of him and Eddie and info in there.

"Well, in the past I had the Vista-Lite set by Ludwig. It had the black and white stripes and it was put together by gluing the different strips together. One of the first things we do before anything - because Dave tends to jump on the drums, stand on them and humiliate them - is to test them for strength. I stood on the drum and it promptly snapped in half, so we took it to a place where they coated the inside with a quarter inch of fiberglass and the sound on it was unreal. That is what I used in '81." - Alex Van Halen
