From my maiden voyage with it, I have the following lessons. One, you don't have to use oil but it really helps when you do. Two, it's a just a convection oven with a really strong fan. Three, tater tots are great in it. Four, clean up is easy.

Tried this last night with frozen wings and WOW! Best wings I've made so far. A bit of a pain stopping the thing every 5-7 minutes to turn them but worth it. I air fried them plain for 35 minutes stopping and turning every 5-7 minutes then added hot sauce to them and put them back in for 7 minutes to soak in the hot sauce. Delicious

Did you do them dry? If so did they come out nice and crispy?

^^^

I literally took the frozen bag of wings out of the freezer and dumped them in the air fryer. I made sure they were spread apart for circulation and let er rip! Just rotated every 7 mins then brushed with hot sauce after 30 then back in for a couple minutes the soak in the hot sauce. Yes they came out crispy, almost perfect.

Funny, I just ordered a 6 quart one from BJ's because it was on sale for 50% off. Don't have any experience with these things. But it would be neat to fry some thing without using all that expensive peanut oil and the cleanup/waste.

My friends have one, cook everything in it and love it. I just finally dialed in my pressure cooker so the air fryer will have to wait until next year!

Air fryer is next on the list. The electronic pressure cooker performs wonders: 4 1/4 pound whole frozen chicken, , , , done in 40 minutes.

Emeril Lagasse 6-Qt. Air Fryer

Just ordered this one. Not sure if it is good or not but seems to be a great deal. Most 6 quart air fryers are double to triple the price.

You can get BJ's online shopping free for a week. That's how I got it. No agreement needed free trial. No need to cancel.

Sous vide? Yes. I did some interneting and found that it can be accomplished in a crock pot.

"Most" sous vide recipes call for about/around 135F. I found that a controllable crock pot will hold 140F on "warm", warm only not "low. I've done the meanest, toughest, stew meat from Walmart in the crock for about 24 hours. Came out like filet!!! I did some tough country style pork ribs and they came out like pork butter.

Oh and, the key is no seasoning, perhaps only a little salt. You can season as you like when you prepare the final dish.

Yes, sealed them up good and tight. Did not bother keeping it off of the bottom, just covered in water. I started with warm/hot tap water to get a little ahead of the process.

Cool. I'll try this when I see some cheap ass tough steaks on sale. I have tons of cooking temp probes to keep an eye on temp. I bet a basket to suspend would work good. My crock pot gets hot on the bottom, it's an oldy.

Only use a crock that has a "warm" setting on it, not low. Should be no problems.

And, what I found interesting about slow cookers is that the "low" setting IS NOT a lower temperature, it just takes longer to get up to "hot" than the actual "hot" setting does!!

Well I'll give this a go before buying a 100 dollar sous vide unit to see if I even like it. Who knows maybe my gear will work good, wont even need it.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Chuck roast can come close to being as decent as brisket on a smoker too.

Two things. The sous vide with steak will make a very tender steak but you have to throw it on the grill just to get the grill marks.

I did the coconut shrimp air fry recipe. Pat shrimp, dredge in corn starch, dip in egg white batter and then sweetened coconut flakes. Put them in air fryer for 15 minutes on 330 and flip around and toss at halfway. Very good. Lots less fat and plenty of flavor.

I just bought a Power XL 5qt air fryer from Walmart this weekend. My first go at this thing was fried gator nuggets. They came out decent, a little chewy but that's the Gator. Can't wait to try some other recipes in there. Chicken wings will be next on the list if anyone has perfected those in the air fryer yet.

You gotta sear that fat. It was my plan. I need one of these torches...

Air fryer will be here soon.

So did my first cook on the air fryer. We did fresh cut french fries for the maiden voyage. I used like a few drops of canola/olive oil mix. The fries came out wonderful. I only had 3 giant potatoes and the family ripped right through them. It was a hit. It reminded me of potatoes done in our convection oven but also fried. It tasted better than frying though and better than in the convection oven. It really exceeded my expectations. Avoided air fryers for a while because I thought they were a gimmick. Can't wait to try some more things. The coconut shrimp sounds great.

Made southern fried chicken with this thing. Came out great. Batting 2 for 2 with it and it is paying off. Family is loving the fried food without all the oil and 80% less clean up.

It was good. When I do it again I will let the oil soak into the batter longer and flip the chicken at mid time. This recipe calls for spraying the batter with oil before putting it in but never mentioned flipping it. But since it is not sitting in oil gravity finds is way and pulls it from the top. So the top comes out more like a cookie crunch and the bottom like traditional fried chicken. I think flipping it will work out well. Although my wife liked it not being oily like fried chicken from the store or made in the deep fryer. Only caveat was 20 minutes to do 5 pieces. I battered like 18 pieces lol.

Next up is the coconut shrimp and bang bang shrimp and then empanadas for taco Tuesday next week. Emeril has a nice empanada recipe in the book that came with this fryer. Gonna give it a go.

I got mine at Costco for $70. The fried chicken looks great. With the kids home for school, I am able to put bagel bites in for 7 minutes at 400 and they are perfect for the lazy lunch. It takes 15 minutes for the oven to get to 400. It's very good as a reheater. I also did thin slice potato chips. That took about 20 minutes but they were crunchy and good.

Guess the deals I posted, one from BJs and one from Newegg are pretty good then. Oh, yeah, clean up is hardlr anything at all. Super nice. Fried chicken was a few wipes with paper towels lol.

Well I broke down and got the sous vide because a wifi one and container was on sale. I'll be trying that tonight on some cheap steaks from aldi. I'm going to see if I can make magic happen with it. I'll have to take them out back to sear them on the grill. I'm gonna need a torch lol

Anyway, I think these two purchases got me up to date with modern cooking.

I only made some creme brulee in it so far. Honestly, my favorite is a side of salmon on the smoker at 275 until internal temp is 137 and let it rest til it cooks itself to 140 and let it rest some more until it cools down a bit. Holy mackeral! Incredible. The side of salmon at aldi is like 13-15 bucks. Feeds the whole family and then some...

That would make a moist flavorful salmon. Last night I air fried chicken breasts. For my batter I used crushed takis, the spicy crunchy snack. I soaked the breasts in brine for 20 minutes and they came out crunchy and moist.

Did you make your own dough?

Lol No, the premade ones (Goya discos) are awesome. Don't think I'll make my own after using these, no need to unless you want the Venezuelan style dough, a bit more airy less like these. These are our go to for taco Tuesdays now. We use left over meat from BBQ on weekend and chop it up refry it with onions taco seasoning and cilantro. Really easy. You can do just as good in your oven. Just need to flip them once probably.

I got one because of this thread and the sale I came across. Very impressed so far. Salmon was great, frozen Pierogis from frozen in like 10 minutes, planning to try some home made empanadas.

Good idea. Haven't tried fish in it yet. But yeah, definitely look for sales on these things as they are a bit pricey IMO.

Great you had to mention Salmon! My GF and son love it. & Yes I am on the fence about purchasing one as well thanks to this thread I have a pressure cooker but the crisp just isn't there and this would save me heating up the broiler.

Only problem with air fryers is the space. Make sure you get a 6 quart or bigger but not sure if they make them bigger.

I just re read this entire thread thinking the salmon air fryer recipe was in here, but it is the sous vide. What is a good salmon recipe? And those empanadas are on the list now as well!

Last night it got late on us quick and I was too lazy to get the grill out. I marinated three chicken breasts in red wine/Italian dressing for maybe 30 minutes and put them in the air fryer and they came out super tender & juicy. I'm starting to think you can't mess anything up in these things. Looks like while going through this thread there's four of us who bought one due to this topic.

An air fryer is just a compact convection oven. It makes things crispier than a convection oven because of the tight space and I think the fans at close proximity in it extract moisture better too.

I haven't done salmon in there. But I bet any encrusted salmon recipe would work great. I'd just leave the skin ucovered, just salted and do the crust on top.

Just got this one on sale from Best Buy. Good size. I already have a good Breville toaster oven so I did not want to go that route.

Corn on the Cob! Yum!

But, to be honest, good, fresh, sweet corn is kinda hard to get right now but, , , , ,

It was pre-husked. Rolled it up in some wax-paper as I normally would and popped it into the microwave for 4 minutes (you might only want 3 minutes). Took it out of the paper and brushed the ears with a little ghee. Air fried for 9 minutes and rolled it over for another 4 minutes.

Pretty darn good!!! And, with a little improvisation I'm sure that you could make some killer "street corn".

Nice. I haven't been using my air fryer since my empanadas. I'll give the wings a go...

Ours is being used now to reheat fries from takeout. That brings them right back after steaming in the styrofoam.
