>> Seventy years ago, one of the first civil rights leaders of the modern era was killed in a bombing in Florida. Harry T. Moore isn't as well known as civil rights icons Medgar Evers or Martin Luther King Jr. Moore's activism began earlier, in the 1930s. His work in Florida investigating lynchings and registering African Americans to vote cost him his life. He lived and carried out his work from his home in Mims, a small town on Florida's Atlantic coast, where he lived with his wife, Harriette Moore, and two daughters. Today, it's home to the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex.<< ------------------------- "One of the reasons why propaganda tries to get you to hate government is because it's the one existing institution in which people can participate to some extent and constrain tyrannical unaccountable power." Really??? Do you not read the paper on MLK Day or Christmas Day? Each one usually carries a really big article.

Very nice park / museum there in Mims. Just off the Titusville to New Symrna bike trail.

Someone definitely doesn't listen to WMFE. Florida Frontiers has done a lot of stories about him.

nothing political here, just bashing a community for events many decades old!

That mindset is alive and well and there are families that funded that attack that are still prominent in this county.

A Pulitzer Prize winning book titled "Devil in the Grove" by Gilbert King has the story of Harry and Harriette Moore and other atrocities regarding civil rights here in central Florida. They were the first people to die (be murdered) in the civil rights movement. Much of the book is around Thurgood Marshall's role in defending falsely accused/condemned minority defendants (The Groveland Boys). An excellent and frightening read about our central Florida history that happened during a time when many of us middle-agers were young.

Florida has a very ignoble history when it comes to terrorism against natives and African descendants.

Yes that history of the area is quite shitty. It's hard to imagine that some of those feelings, racist as fuck, aren't still here since the bombing is what, only one or two generations past? And some people that knew the bombers and their family members are still alive.
Yes the story is not new obviously, I myself have known about it for 25 or so years I've lived in the area for 30. I learned about it as part of a Brevard community set of sessions that my work sent me to. The Moore's displayed heroism and moral value in the face of ignorance. There is lots of good here. But there are still lots of ignorant bitch crackers. |
