The place is amazing. It changes so fast. I was sitting on the wall at dead low tide just watching 3 guys catching shoulder high 150 yd waves. I say to myself" im going to join them for a wave or two then get another juicy box. I paddle out thinking leisurely fun waves but all of a sudden 8-10 ft face sand sucking, sand churning , top to bottom grinders start coming in. The peak was right in front of the river. I mean ledging up, sucking up real quick. I let the first two sets go through out of fear (sorry but true). Holy crap!! I caught two before running up to the cabina to tell my friends to hurry its world class right now. I say two, one to the corner and the other from the corner to the boats. It lasted for and hour and half. It mellowed out as the tide filled in.

Send me a note when you are ready to go. Costa Rica surf trips is my field of expertise.

Long Skinny, The trip was not arbitrary. We saw the swell and bought tickets 4 days before. For the ten days what got us going was 5ft at 19 seconds. I wont say here but we were really concerned with swell direction. Ive been told there are certain swell direction parameters. A couple days we were out of the tolerances. The days that were within in the range the waves really lined up. The other days it would section a bit.

I sat on it the next day at dead low waiting for the beginning of incoming. It didn't happen.

You should have driven up to Matapalo, then over the mountain to Carate. Is what I'da suggested 20 years ago. Probably get run off by property owning gringos wanting it all to themselves.

I camped south of the river for a couple days in '01. Saw the biggest snake ever ACROSS the road going to the break. I described it to a biologist I met later that trip. When I said it had a diamond pattern, he automatically said Matabuey, Ox killer. Fangs so long they often don't waste venom to kill. We waited for the thing to move on. We ended going around it.

Heading there Sunday - Surfline said 16-18' all week now 4-6. Why do I pay fir this crap??? Lol
Actually glad - don't know how my quiver of fish would handle double OH... any ideas on afternoon stuff in the area ? I know where the wave is ;-)

Johnnyboy-We flew into San Jose then got a place in Hermosa hoping for an evening session. It was blown out. We had dinner in Jaco then got up at 5am and started driving. I flew into Golfito my very first time. Srfgrt- If your a good surfer a fish would be great, me not so much. I was regulating on a 7'2" fun shape. I weight 215lbs. Hopefully in the afternoon you will be relaxing waiting for the end of the day session. Aint much to do there. I drink beer. We took the road to the end at Punta Banco and went up the hill. We went maybe a mile after the top of the hill. I heard if you keep going you will find indigenous people. We did see some "real locals". I saw a guy dropping in on bombs on what look like a 5'8 pizza tray. Keep an eye on the wave. It changes quickly.
