It occurs to me that this kind of nuclear blackmail is an act of desperation, like all terrorism. It's also worth remembering that Ukraine gave up their nukes in exchange for the world's promise to protect them. Now that Putin has overextended himself, squandered the lives of tens of thousands of troops and half of his ordnance, he's running out of options. But it's also interesting that Biden has not threatened him specifically with nuclear rain and fire like the last guy. Strategic vagueness. We have promised swift and terrible consequences but have deliberately remained vague about those specifics. It makes Putin's escalation the focus and keeps the US out of a tit for tat pissing contest that limits our responses. It also buys us time as Russia gets led into a war they have been lied about, maybe cannot win and cannot get out of. It's refreshing that adults are in charge again.
