Just listened to this on NPR. I've been looking to invest some cash I have stashed and I wish I would have heard about it a year ago.

If you go to the .gov website it sez 10K electronically and 5K for paper bonds per year. So you could do it for yourself, you spouse, you kids, etc. My question is can you do both electronic and paper for total of 15k per SS#. You can also redirect you income tax refund(if you get one) towards I bond, not sure of the limit on that.

I read where you could do 10k + 5k for a total of 15k, maybe it works, maybe not?

I have a whole stack of old paper EEs, and I had heard good things about the I. After reading this they are back on my radar and may invent is the I bonds....not a bad rate right now.

thanks.

I'm in.

Yes, 10K "electronic", and 5K "paper".

9.62% compounded every 6 months

Does that mean after 18 months, I would make about $2K on a $10k bond?
(They keep 6 months interest if you cash out before 5 years)

What's the interest rate on an I bond you sell today?

For the first six months you own it, the Series I bond we sell from May 2022 through October 2022 earns interest at an annual rate of 9.62 percent. A new rate will be set every six months based on this bond's fixed rate (0.00 percent) and on inflation.

When can I cash my I bonds?

After they are 12 months old.

If you cash an I bond before it is five years old, you will lose the last three months of interest.
I bonds earn interest for 30 years if you don't cash the bonds before they mature.
If you've been affected by a disaster, special provisions may apply.

This was a helpful post, well done OP.

I stashed 10K myself, wife is going to do the same, and probably the kids too.

Had a talk with a "contrarian" yesterday; he's still on the side "making it big in the Stock Market" and such. He was all "9% aint much, , , , , ,". Well, , , , that's Ok if you can easily except the risks.

I talked with my brother the other week. Right off-the-bat and before I could say much he exclaimed that the bank is only paying .4% (that's 4 tenths of a percent) on "savings". Fook that.

On the other end, , , , , there is/was a thread or two here about "crypto". I had put in only $90 through Coinbase, spread across a couple "favorable" looking coins, just to "watch it". My $90 is now only $31 something.

9.62% might not be that exciting to some of the whipper snappers here but if you are near retirement age and don't want to take a major hit to your "nest egg" its just fine. The only problem is the amount you can invest is limited even after you use all the SS#'s in your household. The stawk market has had an incredible run since the lows of 2009 and valuations are now reminiscent of the "dot com" days of 1999/2000 on some of the tech names(although some have already been cut in half from the their highs). If you lose 50% you have to make a 100% return just to get back to even. That's a sobering metric in my book. Seems like commodities have done OK recently with oil out performing by a considerable margin, take a look at XOM chart as an example. No doubt that commodity out performance is also part of the reason inflation numbers are off the hook. The poster child for for ultra high risk investing the last several years has been the Ark Innovation ETF managed by Cathie Wood...down 50% year to date. It has/had large positions in Tesla and other stuff like Coinbase. Tuttle Capital Short Innovation ticker SARK shorts everything in the Ark EFT and it's up over 50% year to date. There are some alternative investing options out there like "Yield Street" where you can get exposure to investments previously available only to HNW individuals. Stuff like art, apartment buildings etc. And finally rental properties have been benefiting from the rising rents while also participating in capital appreciation as of late. If you can manager the expenses like insurance, property taxes and maintenance with good tenants on board rentals can create a decent income stream with tax benefits like depreciation, etc.

I have to say I'm not surprised that stocks for low profit/high stock value companies have declined. There was a time you actually had to make money with your company before it became profitable in the Markets. Buybacks are nothing but a shell game.

So, I guess some watchers are saying that the next I Bond rate could be as high as 9.86% on November 1.
