What are some of your favorite spots? Scored PR really good a few weeks ago and planning a trip for late January, was thinking Bocas but does anyone have any recommendations? How's Nica and Costa Rica that time of year? I've only been during the summer. Thank god travel is starting to become normal again.

The only time I saw Costa Rica flat, I mean rolling up on the beach was on a January 1st.

Pacific Nicaragua and Costa Rica tend to feature southern hemisphere swell, so they tend to be summer.
Nica is in a political crisis. Ortega "elected" himself president for however long....
Haven't seen low fares to Hawaii for a while. PR, yes. In the contiguous US, the rental car crisis seems to be waning.

Been to Ecuador and am not a fan. The wind blew pretty much the entire 2 weeks and almost everybody said that "it's never like this". (It didn't blow hard, just enough to make it not great; it was definitely a factor.) Then I met a guy who had moved there a couple of years ago from California (his wife was Ecuadorian) and he said it was almost always that way, but "You get used to it". I don't know which to believe, but, if I have one bad trip (which this was), I don't go back.
Another issue was the guides. I don't use a guide normally, but, was talked into it here by the guy who booked our trip. (Won't mention his name, but...) They were lazy, lazy, lazy. I was passed around and ended up with a good one who took us to several places because he wanted to surf too. But, I watched the others. They never took their charges anywhere. They just sat on the beach at Montanita drinking beer and talking to the chicas telling their clients, "This is the best around". They have the biggest frickin' oysters I have ever seen, though. There were huge piles of these monsters sitting on tables outside of every restaurant around. They were amzing to look at, but, I avoid filter feeders when I don't know the water. Danger lurks! Short story - I won't go back. |

Depends on what you're looking for. Summer in the Southern Hemisphere can be a lot of fun by FL standards, and always an adventure.
I've caught Peru good around this time of year. Jagged coastline can pick up swell from a lot of different angles. Not giant, but some of the reef breaks can still unload a ton of power. It also depends on exactly when you're going. Cyclone season picks up in Australia just after the new year, and their east coast from Noosa to Sydney offers a million options. |

For Costa Rica, I have found, the best time to go is 2 weeks after Easter. Everyone gets off for the E week and those that had to work get the 2cnd week. Then all the kids go to back to scholar. That might have changed since 05.

I'm taking a chance and hitting the off season in El Salvador . Not many people and clean water , can be very fun in Feb . March is better , but I can't go then . My 2 cents
