Went out today on the Banana River and found the biggest school of reds i have ever seen. 20-40+ lbs and did not spook when came up to them. I followed them around putting my line in front of the group and they just would not bite the gulp. So frustrating...........

Here an update on the brown algae bloom from SJRWMD. Not looking good.

Many of you have asked to be kept informed about the occurrence of algae blooms in the Indian River Lagoon and the continuing impacts from the lagoon's loss of over 47,000 acres of seagrass in 2011-2012 when compared to 2009 levels.

The brown tide pelagophyte species (Aureoumbra lagunensis) has made an early return to the northern IRL. This is the same microalgae species that made its first recorded Florida bloom in the Mosquito Lagoon last summer and moved west into the northern IRL but did not go further south than Titusville. The current 2013 bloom was first detected in the northern tip of the IRL on April 8 with densities of ~ 47,250,000 cells/L. By April 22, densities there had increased to over 650,000,000 cells/L. Within two weeks (May 8), brown tide densities in northern IRL were over 900,000,000 cells/L at Big Flounder Creek, and 360,000,000 cell/L near Titusville. Samples collected on May 8 in southern Mosquito Lagoon also revealed the presence of brown tide (at 151,360,000 cells/L). Water clarity has taken a hit as a result of these blooms: Secchi depths measured 0.3 m (at Titusville), 0.25 m (at Big Flounder Creek), and 0.7 m (at southern Mosquito L.) on May 8. The bloom currently (May 16th) has spread south of Titusville and dissipates north of the NASA Causeway (SR405).

Other smaller, short-lived diatom blooms and microalgae blooms are also occurring throughout the central and northern portions of the estuary. The frequency of the Brevard County manatee, dolphin and pelican mortalities appears to be declining with no new deaths reported recently. From January 1 through May 10, 2013, 182 manatees died in Brevard - 46 from undetermined causes. The large silver mullet fish kill in the southern IRL and St. Lucie River-Estuary at the beginning of May is still under investigation by FWC.

In order to keep the public informed about current lagoon issues, the St. Johns River Water Management District and the Indian River Lagoon Program have updated the lagoon's web pages - highlighting the 2011 superbloom, explaining how many lagoon stakeholder agencies, NGOs and universities are working together to better understand the shift in the IRL's health and to identify potential solutions. This also includes information on the SJRWMD's /NEP Indian River Lagoon Protection Initiative, and ways residents can help to make positive changes in the lagoon.

I have a spot that's brackish water and I can't get the bigger tarpon to hit anything. I've tried all sorts of tackle and have caught little dudes but does anyone have something they would attack?

Can anyone keep an eye out? I picked up a a little boat for the flats and took mom out for mothers day. It was soon apparent that the trolling motor I have only goes so far and that a push pole would have been so much better.

Side Note: Where were all the fish at yesterday... I've never experienced the thousand islands so dead.

31 year old French guy, Pierre Champion, who evidently works on Wall Street and fishes off City Island, the Bronx.

A quote from the story:

At times, Mr. Champion held his rod down with his foot, letting the line trail in the water while he paddled. The goal, he said, was to get into rod-bending fights with big fish, like the 44-inch bass that recently pulled him around out by Execution Rocks lighthouse, in the Sound.

"It's a stand-up sleigh ride," he said.

Took the SUP out around noon for some fishing on the flats. Caught 3 catfish, a small trout, a stingray, and this 21 inch redfish. A gator showed up and ran me out of his hunting grounds.

Hi Guys,

I'm an experienced freshwater fisherman but not so much saltwater. My buddy from up north is visiting this week and he loves to fish. It would be great to get him something big from the surf. I'm thinking we just throw some live mullet or pinfish or something and see what we get. My question is this, is there somewhere to throw a cast net right now and easily get some? I do have a 6' cast net that I got for those days you can see the black pods in the surf, but is there somehwere to throw it where I'll have good success this week? I know it's a noob question but thanks for the help. Or am I better off just getting some at the bait shop? I'd rather not spend money for bait though. I have been catching some whiting on a pompano rig and throwing them out with success, but that can take too long or I can get skunked altogether.

I recently moved to an area across from a canal off the St Lucie River. I don't know anything about shrimping.

1. Do shrimp run in this type of water?
2. What do I need to go shrimping?
3. Is there somewhere I can read up on basic techniques for this?

Obviously, I am a major newb to living near the water. I read about some of the shrimping reports on this site, and I became curious.

Well another great weekend on the stickmarsh, fish have moved up, all along canals and near every stump seems to be a bed with a fat green black girl on or near it, if you like bass fishing get on it soon

6 Casts, and 5 bull reds, One broke a 4x VMC Treble hook on my plug :-D . . .

After landing number 3, as I cast my plug I said, please no more BULL reds, and when I set that hook, I was like CRAP. . .

5th Cast, I let out an F bomb. . . I walked away after that w/ bloody nails, pumped up Popeye arms, bloody fingers, Drenched to the bone, and one hell of a smile . . . w/ uncontrollable shivers since it was 42 degrees and the wind was blowing at 10 - 15 mph :-D

Taken yesterday on the flats out of Thousand Islands. What a sight to see one big school of these guys this size and bigger with no fear swimming right up to us and then the chase was on. Only got one to hit, but it was worth it!! My son had a blast fighting it and landing it.

I recently read somewhere that Key West city government ordered a study on the economic impact of fishing tourism. I'd imagine they are going to try and figure out which tourist group brings in the most money to see who gets the short end of the stick.
