Any coordination with XF500?

Hi, I'm wondering if there is anyone with surfrider who may be in touch with the Expedition Florida 500 (XF500) team for a coordianted cleanup when he paddles through the area in the beginning of June?

Justin is paddle boarding around the state's waterways to raise awareness of the fragility of OUR ecosystem. He has been documenting his travels on Facebook, and he has been getting volunteer clean-up crews together along the way.

Sebastian Inlet Chapter has a busy schedule:

May 15 - Monthly meeting (this month at Paradise Park, 7:30pm
May 18 - Hands Across the Sand - In cooperation with the Cocoa Beach Chapter, come to Lori Wilson Park at 11 am and join hands at noon to show support for a clean energy future and opposition to proposed seismic testing off our coast. These powerful sonic blasts would kill or injure thousands of whales and dolphins if permitted.
May 25 - Reef Appreciation Day - Noon to ~4pm behind Balsa Bill's; learn about the Space Coast Reef and explore exposed portions on a big minus tide.
May 25 - One Year Anniversary Party at Sebastian Inlet Surf and Sport; 6pm 'til... Lots of food, fun, and music on their fabulous front porch.
June 1 and 2 - Waterman's Contest in Cocoa Beach, the Surfrider challenge pits chapter teams from around the state against each other in a friendly rivalry.
June 8 - A presentation on the Space Coast Reef (with lots of pictures) at the Barrier Island Center.
June 19 - Party! At Coasters Brew Pub! We're going to make our June meeting a Wednesday night bash at THE PLACE for the best beers in town. Explore the outdoor beergarden and enjoy the updated food menu with us!
June 22 - International Surfing Day at Ocean Ave Park In Melbourne Beach. All day long, activities include giveaways and free surf lessons for kids.

Beach Nourishment in North Reach

The US Army Corps of Engineers has announced plans to nourish the North Reach of Brevard County (Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach) with sand from the Canaveral Shoals offshore borrow site. This is the same borrow site used to nourish the North Reach in 2001 and 2005. Scientific research has shown that the sand from the Canaveral Shoals borrow site is much coarser than the natural sand in the North Reach and will result in increased in rip current formations and have a negative impact on the surfing wave conditions. An alternative borrow site, the beach at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, is available and has been used to nourish the beaches in Cape Canaveral five times, most recently in 2010. The sand from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station borrow site is a much better match for the North Reach, which is not surprising since that sand would naturally flow into the North Reach if the jetty at Port Canaveral did not trap it north of the inlet. Cocoa Beach Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is leading the fight to prevent the placement of incompatible sand on our beaches. We will make a public presentation at the Cocoa Beach City Commission meeting on May 2 at 7PM. We will also speak at the Cape Canaveral City Commission meeting on May 21. We encourage all local residents who prefer a more natural and safer beach to get involved. Contact your city and county commissioners and make your voices heard. Surfrider Foundation is involved in a coalition of business, consumer, and conservation organizations pushing for insurance reform in Florida during the current legislative session (now through beginning of May). One of the coalition's stated goals is ''Prohibiting Citizens from insuring new development in vulnerable coastal areas.''

The first call for public action is out, see the just-launched website at http://www.strongersaferflorida.org/ and send a message re downsizing the Cat Fund. Currently it's the lead item on the site.

I'll update this as the session progresses. Thanks for helping...

When one travels to Central & South America to those awesome beaches to catch those waves, stay at a quaint palm-frond hut in the rainforest, where one can even login to the electronics, remember, all uses electricity. Think of the cost to the indigenous people who live there, or used to live there peacefully for centuries, in their own simple way like the Ngabe of Panama, who don't use electricity or running water.
The following 2 links tell the sad story, fueled by increasing demand to provide power for relocating, affluent migrants and tourists. The Panamanian government's disregard for its indigenous people, this is the 3rd hydro project and more to be built to sell excess power and carbon credits to the UN.
If you haven't ever read Algezeera, don't be afraid. The former BBC reporters are doing an awesome job, and have the moxie to 'tell it like it is.' One should contemplate how one's own inadvertent trip to the undeveloped areas, beautiful, inexpensive, hospitable and quaint as they are, affects those who live there, and have no means of moving elsewhere, and who do not use electricity, or make other demands on the system.

Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge

I went down to the Barrier Island Conservation Center for the Archie Carr Working Group meeting yesterday, got us a seat on that group. Many of our South Beaches breaks are in the refuge. This area has set aside some of the nicest coastline (with the highest density of turtle nesting) in south Brevard and northern Indian River counties.

The group is made up of the government agencies that run or have input into the management of the refuge, as well as conservation groups and researchers. Surfrider Foundation is there to represent the interests of surfers as stakeholders. The news is very positive, the refuge management recognizes surfers as a user group and we were well-received at the meeting.

I brought up the subject of trying to open a new access or two, some of the areas that were historically used have been closed off. These would probably on county lands within the refuge. The proper people (with the county) were in attendance, and I initiated discussions with them. Again, well-received and we'll continue to work with them to advance the ideas.

Just recently, the ACE (American Corp of Engineers) has released it’s ‘’final plan’’ for the mid reach (the 7.8 miles of beach from south end of PAFB to north Indialantic). Public comment is open until January 30.

This section of beach has been spared the type of large-scale dredge-and-fill ‘’beach renourishment’’ projects that have ruined surfing and fishing up and down our coast. Because of the unique coquina reef which is a Federally protected fish habitat, the ACE has had to formulate a plan ‘’they say’’ will only bury a few acres of reef. We all know how accurate the ACE is at predicting the outcome of their projects (not).

Many of us who use this area understand what a treasure we have in this reef. The structured bottom creates some of the best surf in Florida. No need to name spots, but you know where they are. The beach fishing is nearly as famous as the surf spots; the reef supports a wide variety of species by providing habitat and food. Anyone who has been snorkeling in the area knows how rich it is in life, and there’s nothing else like it in Brevard County. The proponents of this project are very careful to never use the word reef, they always use the word ‘’rocks’’. This shows the type of contrived thinking in which they engage.

In addition to being environmentally disastrous, this project is also an incredible waste of our Federal, State, and local tax dollars. It’s a bail-out for the people who own structures built way too close to the power of the Atlantic Ocean. The initial cost is ‘’only’’ $33M, but over the life of the project its $163M. The primary justification for the project is $11.5M PER YEAR of ‘’storm damage reduction’’ in that 7.8 mile stretch – that is, the damage to structures will be $11.5M/yr less with the project, compared to no project. An independent peer review of the ‘’plan’’ seriously questioned this number, but the ACE is sticking with it…

The people who frequent this forum are among the primary users of this resource. Let us be its primary defenders. SAVE THE REEF!
