Live oak science

It appears that live oaks were savanna trees, putting up with occasional ground fires that killed off competitors such as laurel oaks and southern magnolias. Magnolias, in particular, can get started beneath a live oak, shoot straight up, and create a crown above the live oak's crown. I've seen this happen in Jacksonville, and it's a creepy sight. So much for a big live oak having ownership of its site. From the story:
"Sweet gum, black cherry and magnolia are among the culprits, but the worst offender ironically is laurel oak, which resembles the live oak but is not nearly as sturdy, killing more people in the South than any other tree, Putz said. "I wouldn't park my brand-new Saab underneath a laurel oak if I had one, whereas the live oak is a homeowner's best friend," he said."

Bump.  I saw a laurel oak today that's likely to kill a live oak.

Huh? A Saab? If I had a Saab I'd park it in the river.

I thought of buying a Saabaru, a Subaru Impreza dressed up so Saab dealers could sell it.  That was back when GM controlled both Saab and Subaru (which is now a Toyota affiliate).

The ability of laurel oaks to murder live oaks is entirely serious.
