Went on a walk around the yard today and noticed my papaya wasn't looking as leafy as before. Upon closer inspection I found some big caterpillars on the leaves, they are bright green and about the size of my index finger.

I know that's not a great description but any way to narrow down what they might be and if I need to do anything?

Daniel,

Was it this one?

This is an Alope Sphinx larva.... Erinnyis alope. They are pretty big and they do eat Papaya leaves so I'd pick them off.

Cricky!-Might make a good Bush Tucker feed mate - or- since they've been eating Papaya leaves, maybe you could squish 'em up and slather some road kill..should make a bonzer tenderizer.

The best way I found to control pests on papaya trees is to give them a regular hose down (or hose up) with water. Just wash them off with a decent amount of pressure but not enough to harm the plant.

Sounds good, thanks to both. I'll remove the caterpillars and put them elsewhere, and spray down the plant.

i have the same problem.  how do you kill them.  plucking them off and squashing them takes to long.  chemical way? without harming the fruit?

How is plucking them and squashing them any more work than driving to the store, buying poison, then driving back, then reading the label, opening the package, then squeezing the handle? By that time I could have squashed a hundred caterpillar.

I found them on my trees too...hate squashing a sphinx moth, but sometimes needs to be done. The stupid wasps are worse IMHO. They attack the fruit with their wiggly brood.

You gotta wrap the papaya to stop the wasp.

Try neem oil, works great as you don't eat the skin.
