Unfortunately for any Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) lover in the US, all and every efforts to grow them in the US had met with failure so far. The sensitive “Queen Of Fruits” (who’s the King, Mango?) trees cannot tolerate any temperature below 40F.

So far, there is only one fruit-bearing Mangosteen tree in the whole US, located in the south Florida property of famous rare fruit enthusiast and author, Bill Whitman.

Here is an article from The New York Times,

Asit, believe it or not? King of Fruits is Durian! I have had the best one in the past (also the worst one - frozen) and I agree to the name. Although I have never seen the mangosteen trees in my homeland, I understand they grow in the southern part of the country and this year they have so much that they practically give them away. You can get them in the can but they do not taste the same as the fresh ones.

Can't say I've eaten one but did live in Indonesia 3 years and smelled them often. PEEEHEW !!!!!!!! a very rotten odor.

Did eat many local dishes, frequently at food stalls, many times Pam and I were the only expatriots there but drew the line at eating Durian.

Come to think of it didn't eat roast rat in Nigeria either.

Aceman, Durian is a kind of fruit that you either love it or you hate it, it's no in between. I have brothers and sisters - half of them like it but the other half run the other way. What can I say?

So how can you call a fruit "The King" if only half the population likes it?

Shouldn't the King label go to a more universally liked fruit? Like apple, orange, pineapple, banana, or my vote...the mango?

Last summer, the produce place on Wickham/Pineda had some mangosteen. It was really really good.

When I went to Costa Rica last summer and visited my friend he had a bowl full of mangosteen on the dining room table. I kinda freaked out a little bit and raved on them. To them they were like, eh? its a common fruit. Needless to say I ate all their fruit and after I left I think they appreciated the mangosteen a little better.

And the king of the fruits is  ((drum roll)) ... Mango.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/25/health/nutrition/25recipehealth.html?_r=0

Mango = king, mangosteen = queen .. kinda makes sense ...

Winner.

BTW, David Fairchild was also a big fan of mangosteen. I look forward to trying one.
