The Red Passionflower (Passiflora coccinea), known also as the Red Granadilla is possibly the only Passionflower that taken on three (3) distinct configurations after it blooms and all in one day.

This Passionflower, a native of Guyana and Guadeloupe, grows vigorously and keeps on rewarding you with prolific blooms almost all year long, with little or no care.

It is no wonder that the Red Passionflower is the vine of choice in Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park
in Florida.

The 4th photo shows a comparison of three totally different species of Passionflowers.

All flowers in these photos were growing on vines in my property in Rockledge, Florida.

I had tried many a times for long long time, with no luck.
But then again, I'm no expert either.

Good plants to grow for butterflies-they are the host plants for the Zebra Longwing and the Gulf Fritillary butterflies.

would red passionflower work for covering/vining a trellis? I'm looking for something to make a thick blanket of foliage (and flowers) that won't go to heck in the cold months

?

As I had already mentioned in my write-up, that is exactly what Disney had done with this in Animal Kingdom.

Don't know if mine was due to some type of neglect issue, but mine died to the ground this winter.
Pretty bad because it was hardly cold. It has sprouted and is about a foot tall now. I had been working
to train it up to beautify a pine tree.

For decades, if not centuries, any Red (Scarlet) Passionflower was always classified as Passiflora coccinea. However, Gene Joyner's Red Passionflower was not the same as a P coccinea as was described by Aublet in 1775. The true Passiflora coccinea is quite different from Gene Joyner's.

After learning that this isn't Passiflora coccinea, the logical question that follows is: "What is it?"

Hard to believe, perhaps, for a plant that has been cultivated in tropical areas around the world, but it didn't have a published scientific name until 2006, when John Vanderplank set the record straight about Gene's Passionflower as Passiflora miniata in an article in the Curtis's Botanical Magazine.

The Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN/ARS/USDA) contains the correct information (and species distribution) for Passiflora miniata.

I have this on a shadow box fence
It completely covers the fence.....Ground to top, solid so you cannot see through it..
It only took about 1-2 years to cover 6 foot fence for about 50 feet long (both sides)  I also added a purple passion flower vine..Does not seem to grow as thick but it adds color and intermingles with the Red
