.. Hibiscus? I have two that are pretty much out of control, is it safe to take them back a little this time of year? And if it is okay, where is the proper pruning point?

Welp, it's now the size of a small giant squid.

You don't want them growing vigorously December-February, so now would seem OK.
They really need to be cut back regularly. The Puerto Rican practice of growing hibiscus hedges didn't make for flowers.

You can cut hibiscus as far back as you want. It will always re-sprout. I do all the time.

They like to be cut back / pruned.. Encourages new growth and thickens them eventually... Also thin out / take out the older thicker branches hidden at the base..
