Looking for container grown royals, anything from 6-8-10 feet. And they have to be the type with the large bulbous trunk base. There are several different types and I like the ones with the fat base. Not sure if they are the elata or regia. Any help appreciated...

I think the fat trunk ones are from Cuba.

Elata = Regia
The 'Florida Royal' and 'Cuban Roya'l are one in the same. The earlier name 'regia' then takes precedence, once they were 'lumped together'

Actually, "elata" is the earlier specific epithet, going back to William Bartram, but a relatively recent change to the nomenclature rules makes it possible to "conserve" a widely used name at the expense of an older but less used one.  So Cuba, where R. regias are everywhere, won out over Florida.

I drove by that nursery on plumosa, M.I. yesterday and saw some fat bottom royals.

South fl would be your best bet or try 4C's nursery in Palm Bay.

Thank you all for the info. After searching for a month and a half I scored at 4c's. Got a couple solid 12 footers just about to start showing wood at the base. 200 bucks per. Big thanks to Epicsurf!

Ive been surprised at how cold-hardy royals actually are. Always considered them a delicate south Florida tropical, but I have one in my yard that was a seedling when I planted and is now about 25' with a three foot diameter base. It has been through a bunch of freezes with no ill effects. Neighbor has two that were here for that really bad winter (maybe 10 years ago?) when we saw 10 consecutive days at about 28°. Killed all my x-mas palms and a bunch of mango trees etc. Royals didnt miss a beat.
