I am clearing a nice area in my back yard. Facing east, some 1000 feet from the high tide line but behind the fence), dry, sandy, sunny, Melbourne Beach area.
I don't have sprinklers, but I'm planning to do a rain garden, i.e. there will be a valley in the middle and a water path from the gutters. There is also a AC drip close by, which I can direct, but still it never is really wet. I could use some ideas what to plant there, especially in the middle where I need something dense and about head high, for privacy hedge which I just ripped out. It was mostly snow bush, what a pain! Native, bug resistant, low maintanance. Anyone has any coco plum cuttings to trade/give away? I can trade some miracle fruit. |

I trimmed the cocoplum recently. Still lots of cuttings left. |

Consider soil amendments?
Couple considerations: 1. Rhapis (lady palm) 2. Bananas 3. Mango Tree (or other fruit - sapodilla [best for salt and wind tolerance], jaboticaba, avocado...etc.) 4. Sabal Mauritiiformis (or S. Lisa!) would be kind of cool...and 1 or 2 Pseudophoenix Sargentii 5. Veggie Garden and/or Wild Flowers ------------------------- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate. |

Hot tub is to the right, behind the arecas.
Lot's of good suggestions, thanks all! Not a good spot for the tree though, too close to the house. Some nice bush in the middle, few midsize plants around it, and room for annuals/veggies next to the patio edges. |

Are coco plum edible? Looking for a hedge type plant for a hedge between my organic yard and my neighbors, the Roundup family.

^LOL I live next to a "Death-to-the-Lagoon" yard and every time it rains you can see their fertilizer runoff greening up my grass. ------------------------- add a signature since I'm here in profile anyway |

Same here. My neighbors have been watering every day for several months and laying down the juice to try to push their St. Augustine through a chinch bug crisis. My side yard is mega green. We live on the Paola series soils (sand dunes that run from Rockledge up through Titusville with an expression over on the hilly part of Merritt Island between 520 and Pineda). St. Augustine is not appropriate turf for these soils, especially when we get less than 40" of rain from April 1, 2016 to April 1, 2017. ------------------------- ... |

http://nassau.ifas.ufl.edu/horticulture/fruit/pineappleguava.html Not a true quava. Neat shrub. Fruit is allegedly tastey. Flowers are pretty. Extension office says they are drought and aerosol salt tolerant. I just got a couple of hideously root-bound specimens for cheap that I'm going to try. If they don't take because of the crappy roots I'm going to try to find fresher specimens. They need a cold period to set fruit. I think it gets cool enough around here most winters for them to set fruit; although after the last couple of winters I'm not super confident about that.

Please let me know if you find someone that carries these. I don't remember seeing them at the sale yesterday or at the two nurseries I usually go to.
