Live in I.H.B. since 65' and just noticed 1 lawn with this Icon Zoysia Grass and now the guy across the street just did his Whole lawn too. I did read up on it such as drought and salt tolerant. Looks really nice, the blades on the grass are very thin.
Just never heard or saw this type of grass around here. It does not grow thick(like golf course grass.....in one way), so it may take a special mower to mow???
Anybody have pro's and con's of the grass???
Thanks!!

I like the zoysia grass. Was unfamiliar with it until recently.  A house in Sat. Bch. put some in about 6 months ago and looks real good still. Was in Sarasota in February and saw a lot of it on some commercial properties.  Also have seen some real nice houses in Indiatlantic that have it.  Suppose to require less water and less maintainence for bugs, disease, ect.

Visited a house in southernmost Brevard where the Zoysia had been unwatered and mostly uncut all summer.  Looking a bit browned out, but otherwise fine.  I need to think about replacing the St. Augustine that died in my backyard.

my mom has it in her front yard, for many years now. No sprinklers. It browns during drought, comes right back nice and green after a rain.

I have had empire zoysia in my yard for about 7 years now. I ripped up all the weeds and replaced it myself. It is less maitnence than st Augustine. I bag mine when I mow it, otherwise it will build up a layer of thatch that needs to be removed frequently. The blades wilt and turn grey and then brown when it doesn't get water. A few days in this heat without water and you will notice the blade wilting. After a while it will look dead but with water it always seems to shoot up new blades assuming it's established. When it is stressed from lack of water it doesn't look great but it survives.

Weeds stick out like sore thumbs so it's easy to keep them picked. Unlike St Augustine the zoysia sends out sub surface runners several inches deep which shoot blades of grass upwards. This means it's invasive so keep that in mind when planting around flower beds. Either put down a physical barrier that is 4-5 inches deep or be prepared to use roundup to kill off unwanted runners.

Oh and the pollen when you mow it when it's dry is hell. Ironically I'm really allergic to it.

And please don't use Roundup. That stuff is poison for people and the environment.

Ive got some Empire in my backyard near a body of water. It does quite well in the moist sunny areas. When you start getting into even a semi shade it dies off.

Its much softer and finer bladed than st aug, and it can get into stuff if you let it. But.its much nicer to walk on barefoot.

In a sunny yard with good irrigation i would think it would look very good.
