So we finally figured out that my wife is very allergic to mangos and the sap.

I have 3 great trees, a Mallika, a Lancetilla and a Valencia pride, along with another small one that I think is a Kent .

Sadly they all have to go.
The Malika is in the side yard, so maybe I can keep that one.

Is it possible to prune and transplant them with a 4" trunk? (the Lancetilla and Valencia)
Does anybody want to try?

They are loaded with fruit, so I'll wait til they are picked.

Hate to just chop them down but I will.
The Kent? could be taken now, too small to fruit

Will trade for native trees, patio citrus or palms for screening.

I love mango, so this pains me greatly, but it is serious.

edit - keeping the Malika, the rest are gone.

Mango allergy sucks. Mango transplant easy. Sorry!

Can they be pruned down drastically and transplanted when they are that big?

I'm not sure; it's worth a try.  In any case, grafted plants grow rapidly.

Sorry to hear of the allergy.  Lychee?

Sorry to hear about the allergy.

Allergy from mango sap, due to a chemical called URUSHIOL, is serious matter.
The degree of reaction, fortunately, varies from person to peson.

Since those trees have to go, might as well try to transplant.

Good luck.

Question, if I take the fruit off the VP and the Lancetilla this early, before pruning and transplanting are they lost or can they be ripened?
I hate wasting food and have plenty of people that will take mangos.
Or should I just wait and have her keep away from them? (doable now that we know)

Also, will these trees survive significant pruning?

If they aren't in the mature green phase I don't think they will ripen properly. It's pretty early for those varieties to be ready but my Valencia pride has ripened 15-20 of the early bloom already so it's possible. Mango trees usually do very well with pruning and transplanting especially this time of year.

I too am allergic and got tired of watching everyone enjoy mangoes so one day I took a bite of a peeled slice, no reaction, found out its just the skin and the sap that bothers me...

So I don`t touch em for long, if I have to peel, I scrub them first, skin them quickly then wash up,,,, I can eat loads of the flesh no problem.

Supposed to be related to the poison ivy family and the #1 human allergy?

Good luck maybe keeping them, just have to be careful...

They are both quite red already....
Way early this year, but with this screwy weather/climate who knows?

And yes JB, it's just the sap and skin, she just needs to stay away, but the reaction was bad enough that I am clearing the back yard

Thanks to everyone that responded. I'm going to let the fruit ripen, give it all away, then take them out.
I'll get back to those that offered to take them.
She knows enough to stay away now.

The Fruit is all gone.
The Lancetilla and the Valencia Pride need to go.
They are both now big, 4-6" trunks, over 10 feet tall.
If any of you who were interested want to try, I'm not sure if now is the time, but I'm ready

I had a great time distributing the loads of fruit from my Mallika.  The variety has several new fans.  Should now be tearing up the patch of dead grass for sweet potatoes.  Do moles eat those?

I grew up with mango trees as a kid. I would get a rash if I touched them, so i didnt.

Fast forward 10 years to Pavones and everybody is eating mangos. So I eat one and nothing happens.

The rest is history

They survived the storm.
Gonna cut them down soon.
