I have been propagating papaya trees for the last couple of years from a sprout from my compost, have no idea where it originally came from. The original tree produced some good fruit but got blown over in a storm. It never had a good root system. I have one tree that started putting out fruit starting before Christmas last year and still has viable fruit on it today. What is the usual season for papaya and after the fruit is all gone, if the tree survives the summer and possible hurricane season, will it produce fruit again? I have a second tree from the same propagation that only had one single fruit on it, but man, was it tasty....

Papaya can fruit both winter and summer. Usually the summer crop has papaya wasp maggots in it.

There are a lot of different variety. some come true from seed, others don't.

They can fruit for years, up to ten maybe. However, typically after 3 or 4 years the fruit aren't as good.

Are papaya wasps everywhere for instance beachside Ormond Beach?

if you see white sappy/milky spots on your papaya, then yes they are. My guess is they are less common up there due to the colder temps in the winter, but during the summer months, where there are sufficient sources of papaya, there may be flies. A friend of mine on mainland in Melbourne has less of a problem than I do, which I find interesting.
