I moved a bunch of big, bright orange-red bromeliads to the front yard a little over a month ago. Aechmea blanchetiana, a prolific species that's both loved for the color and hated for being fairly prolific, and having saw-tooth leaves. A few bright green, grassy, small leaves were peeking out. Had St. Augustine grass snuck in? A careful pull, and a pair of baby amaryllis plants, complete with tiny bulbs, came out. I've seen acorns sprouting in the moist spots, usually with organic matter, where bromeliad leaves join the stem, but amaryllis is a bit weird. The bromeliads were adjacent to an amaryllis bed before I moved them to the front. |

Could it be because the wind carry the amaryllis seeds to your bromeliad?

The seeds probably moved only a foot or two from amayrllis plant to that cozy germination spot. Still, the idea of an epiphytic amaryllis seems weird. |
