I saw and smelled one of these the other day and had to get it. I've been doing a lot of research since purchasing it to make sure it gets the care it needs - I've read they need a little extra care. I've also read that they like acidic soil and regular watering but my main question is - can it take sprinkler water from a well and salt tolerance? Does anyone have one locally - Sat. Beach area? What is/was your experience with growing this plant? Thanks in advance.

The more common name is Banana Shrub. I've had one for about 18 years in mainland Vero Beach--so can't tell you about salt tolerance. It didn't get the greatest of care, but watering in dry spells, some fertilization. The bush did OK until about four years ago when it started to decline, is now barely alive, hasn't bloomed for a couple of years. But I don't think there was any particular pest or anything really "wrong." I believe it has come to its natural end of life in a climate maybe not the best for it. I watched a couple of beautiful pineapple guavas (Feijoa sellowiana) live for about 20 years, then quickly die for no apparent reason. They live longer in California and in New Zealand, where it's less humid.

Ive had a consistently hard time keeping it going beachside. Not sure why, but it would always decline.

Michelia alba on the other hand grows great and smells fantastic

I have a banana shrub in sebastian. Looks great and is hardy. Its been a moderately slow grower. Not much attention on my part other than some water during the spring. No pests or bacterial problems, so far. Its been in the ground for 2 years now from a 1g. This is this first time its bloomed and is about 2.5 ft tall. Not sure about salt tolerance, but wish I replaced the sweet viburnum wwith more banana shrub.
