I have a large coontie palm that started out growing in a large plastic pot. Over time the pot split and the coontie has expanded and now has new growth coming out of its side and towards the bottom. I would like to divide it up into smaller plants and get them back in the ground or potted up, but not sure how to go about it. Do I just separate where the bulbs (pups, corm) join?
Any tips?
Thanks. DM |

I recently dug up a couple of relatively small coonties. Should have taken pictures. One plant had a plump underground stem (you can call it a caudex) crowned with leaves. The other had two stems, and they were easily separated. Your huge plant is far more complex, but every stem with leaves that you can cut off (a Japanese-style garden saw might be good) should do OK on its own. I suspect that someone with more expertisew will provide further details.
