i recently pulled out all my over-grown pygmy date palms that were planted inside my pool screen for 2 reasons. They are poking holes in my screen and when the seed pods emerge every spring, the seeds get all in my pool and cutting the pods is a bitch because of the all the spines on the palm fronds.
I planted some lady palms in the bigger planters located in the corners and now i want to add some low lying vegetation to some of the smaller planters. I was thinking of bromiliads (sp?) but i don't think they like too much sun, unless the screen provides enough of a light filter. Any other suggestions?? Ginger?? or does that grow too much and will need a lot of pruning which i am trying to avoid. Thanks for any suggestions. ------------------------- "Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each" - Henry David Thoreau |

I took a hint from paddleout and converted to all soft-leaved stuff. Heliconia, red banana, and all sorts of elephant ear. For a splash of color, caladiums are my fave. Also philodenron, and ginger do well. Everything I grow inside the screen can die back if it freezes and always comes back in the spring. Get a variety so you have all different height stuff. Heliconia from two to ten feet, same with elephant ear. No more palms, only potted ones...
