Hey Dave, what a co-incidence!!!! I was at a friend's house a couple of weeks ago and saw this plant. From a distance, it looked like orchid but when I walked up to take pictures, it didn't. Beautiful plant and flowers!!!

Where did you get yours? My friend said he picked it up for $10 down south!!!

hmmm...

"Fans only flower once and need to be cleaned out after the flowering period so remove the old leaves down to as low as possible at the end of a season."


I'm going to have to look closer at that. Is it like a bromeliad where it flowers once and then pups out?

It's in an odd monocot family, Haemodoraceae.  From Australia; we have one member of the family on the US east coast, Lachnanthes caroliniana, which lives in low-nutrient wetlands.
