There has to be a market for the carp. Menhaden are nasty, oily things, yet they had to be protected through net bans because someone found a market for them.
Pet food, fertilizer, fish oil, food for farm raised fish... there has to be something? ------------------------- I was right. |

There is some precedent for large predators providing resistance to invasion of exotic species. Marine reserves with high standing stocks of large groupers have much lower biomass of lionfish than reefs where fishing has substantially reduced the median size of groupers. Near exterpation of a large bodied predator could have made the Mississippi basin easier for the carp to invade. But once the invasion has occurred I'd expect it to be a tall order to expect re-establishment or new establishment of the predator to provide sufficient biocontrol. ------------------------- ... |
