To me this study is a joke (from start to finish). Here is the e-mail I sent with my opinion, if you agree with me, please do the same.

Kim,

I don't know why I'm surprised by the lack of thought that went into the proposal for the three day snapper mini season, considering the low level of research that went in to the complete closure of the fishery, but seriously, your biologists need to spend more time on the water and less time in the classroom or office.

The idea that the numbers are greater because fewer died as line caught by-catch is laughable. How on earth is that quantifiable without a Chrystal ball or trained dolphins to do the mortality rate study? Is the by-kill from the scallop and shrimp boats even factored in? This sounds more like a calculated back pedal to cover for the original flawed study than an actual explanation.

A three day mini season and a seven day commercial trial in August are going to be used for a bench mark? If a ground swell gets the current flowing from the north, the bite stops. If the upwelling is still around, the bite is dead. If anglers fish the inshore reefs the snapper aren't there. If the gulfstream is pushed inshore due to easterly flow, the current is too strong to reach the desired mark on the bottom beyond 150 foot depth where the snapper reside in late summer. There are too many factors to consider for this to work. How on earth can a week be used to decide anything, much less the sustainability of a fishery?

Can you please communicate with your people and set up a legitimate study for the American Red snapper; this fish is too important to too many people for the SAFMC to continue with this flawed and often laughable method.

Completely agree, all their studies are done by people crunching numbers and not enough of asking local fisherman and doing hands on research. Those who are on the water regularly would know best what is going on in our area's waters.

they did the studays in portcanaveral on party boat such as the obsession and Miss cape canaveral i remember them coming out on the boats about 6-7 years ago studying the Reds..problem with that is the spots the party boats fish house many smaller fish and are fished on much more (8a, pelican flats, and bigger spots of bottom) if they would of studied spots that smaller boat can fish on and get to they would have seen much bigger fish..i belive that some inshore areas off port canaverall benefit from this temporalrly closure but the closure as a whole is stupid...go troll for kingfish on Chris Benson with an islander skirt and strip on a planer or downrigger 20' under the surface over and mark of fish over the bottom and i GUARANTEE a 20 Plus Pound red snapper!!! Those things are everywere!! way to go NOaa!!

You don't even need to use a downrigger. I had a 25lber eat a live pogy on the surface out at 8a slow trolling for kings.

Condom rigged sardines work great for the snapper we can't catch.... well, we can catch, but can't keep.
