NY Times story (beware their subscription barrier).  New Jersey's laws are somewhat similar to Florida's, so what's going on there bears a resemblance to here.  I'm reminded that in Ponte Vedra, there was a long spate of house owners planting Spanish bayonets in beach accesses, and locals coming along and yanking them out with the help of their pickup trucks.

The story's also memorable for its photo of a beach club, complete with coconut palms.

In 2005 The First Coast Chapter of The Surfrider Foundation won a law suit against St. Johns Co. and those obstructed accesses in PV Beach were cleared by court order.

It was a precedent setting win for Surfrider in the State of Florida. It established SR as a user group with the legal standing (an important legal thresh hold needed in order to be able to bring law suits within the state), the ability, will power and backing to successfully wage a legal battle. This important victory for not only surfers but the entire ocean / beach loving public was voted the Nation Chapter Victory of The Year 2005 by the Surfrider Foundation Nation Board of Directors.

Similarly, Bill Rosenblatt (long time SR activist, former S. NJ SR Chapter Chairman & former member of The SR Foundation Nat Board of Directors) successfully lead several initiatives and legal battles to open public access to beaches in NJ.
