I glassed them with 3 layers on each side laid at a bias- very strong.  Fin rope does little for structural strength, it just provides a curve for the glass to go from the bottom up the fin.  If you know the trick to getting the glass to make the 90 degree turn from the bottom up the fin, you don't need to use fin rope and you get better flow through the fins.
