MLB commissioner Bud Selig mulling pardon for hit king Pete Rose

Thanks to the behind-the-scenes lobbying from some of the most influential Hall of Famers, commissioner Bud Selig is said to be seriously considering lifting Pete Rose's lifetime suspension from baseball.

The tip-off that Selig may now be inclined to pardon baseball's all-time hit king was Hank Aaron's seemingly impromptu interview session with a small group of reporters in the lobby of the Otesaga Hotel on Saturday. In declaring for the first time that he would want an asterisk put on the achievements of any steroid cheats elected to the Hall of Fame, Aaron brought up Rose, who, in August of 1989, was given a lifetime ban for gambling on baseball, saying: "I would like to see Pete in. He belongs there."

I remember watching Pete Rose as a kid, the guy was awesome and deserves to be in Cooperstown, in my opinion. Smart money has him eventually getting in.

Michael Vick can play, but Pete Rose is banned. Total B.S.

I have no problem with Vick being allowed back into football. He's paid his debt to society, with no obvious favortisim either. Let him earn a living. I'm fairly sure Vick will never be a HOF candidate. If you look at his statistics, he's not that caliber QB. Granted he was very entertaining to watch and he did scare the hell out of me every time the Bucs played him. His last couple years in the NFL, his rating was way down and having 2+ years out, isn't going to help.

YES! Put Charlie Hustle in the HOF!! People like Ty Cobb are in and he was probably the biggest racist to ever enter the HOF. Pete's biggest problem was that he continued to lie about his gambling involvement. The sports world should be over it by now, especially considering all the latest sports scandals, his seems minor.

And wouldn't that be "in their personal lives," it being plural and all?

Never knew much about Cobb. Seems to me, tho', that if he was a racist, being one at that time was probably pretty acceptable. That doesn't mean it's right, but their standards then weren't our standards today, and since we can't go back in time. . . well, you get the idea.

Wasn't Babe Ruth quite the womanizer, and wasn't it said that he used to knock them around a bit? He was an alcoholic, too, wasn't he?

I say put Rose in the HOF. His presence will serve the youth of America well as an example of how to work the system.

There's no rule about being racist, there is for gambling.

eibla, I gots to say it, man: You be one of the most judgmental peeps on this forum. You gots opinions that gots opinions, and that's a fact. Ain't nobody think different than you that you can't criticize. Guess the good lord done moved on and left you in charge of choosing good from bad, right from wrong.

I agree with GMAN. Pete Rose (as manager) not only bet on baseball, he bet on his own team's games. There is nothing, NOTHING, that compromises the integrity of the game more than placing bets on a game which you, especially as manager, can directly affect. His actions go way beyond the current steriods users actions. His actions rank up there with Tim Dohaghy's (the self-admittedly cheating basketball ref). His crime, gambling on games in which his team participates, is THE crime in organized sports. How many times did Pete leave a pitcher in too long (intentionally)? How many times did he call for a pinch hitter or make a fielder change that hurt his team or helped the other team? It's bad enough to gamble on your team as a player when you can only influence your own performance. It is far, far worse to do the same as a manager when you have all the players and game situations under your control. He gambled (figuratively and literally) and lost. Now he is acting like a baby, whining all over the circuit, showing up at the HOF inductions to peddle his crap products and his lies. He should stay banned. Everything he ever did as a player is vastly outweighed by his behavior as a manager. We are not talking about his personal behavior, or whether he is a racist or homophobe or wife beater or child abandoner or... We are talking about his compromising the integrity, to the core, of the game he professes to love. He needs to take his self-serving lies and go home. He is a lying, cheating scumbag. Pete Rose should be banned for life. He should take it like a man. He cheated and got caught.

Actually he hasn't said much about it in a long time. This issue came from Hank Arron talking to Selig, not Pete.

ghost - It doesn't really matter what team he bet on. He knew the rule. He knew it was the most sancrosanct of all rules in organized sports (and puhleeeeze, don't compare baseball to prize fighting, pool and NASCAR, which are known to be rigged). He broke the rule. He pays the price. Isn't that what REALLY counts? What makes him any different than any other rulebreaker? His behavior since only reinforces my opinion of him - he doesn't think the rules apply to him, and when they are applied, he whines forEVER. He whined like a baby when he struck out to end his "hits in consecutive games" ("he was pitching like it was the seventh game of the World Series" whahhhhhhhh) and now he has been whining like a baby for going on 30 years. I keep reading all of the good Republicans on this forum writing about personal responsibility. Where are they now? Or, doesn't that apply to "Charlie Hustle"? "Charlie" certainly doesn't think it does.

You know, most Americans are pretty forgiving, 'specially if the wrongdoer did a 180 and completely did good from that point on. Problem with Charlie Hustle is that he didn't: he's remained the same self-aggrandizing schmuck he was when he flaunted and broke the laws of baseball, and he's done little, if anything, to change people's opinions of him.

Your supporting him for the HOF says a lot about your lack of character, especially to the young.

Rigging a sport (NASCAR) in which a car plays the biggest part would be near impossible (blown engine, tires, gas, etc)
But, you failed to read what I said...If he bet on his team to WIN, then he could not RIG it per se
