My parents live down there, and part of the lifestyle of living in S. Melb beach is the slower pace. I have been tempted to pass when held up by a blue hair, but never do. Even in the passing zone. What's the friggin hurry. It's a nice drive, even at night. Slow down and enjoy the smell of the ocean.

Prayers and peace for Gerry's family.

Who said it was a bluehair he was passing?

Monday night, I was on SR44 coming back from the beach. I was going 60 in a 55 all by myself. Then a jacked up dodge comes running up hard from behind and proceeds to relentlessly tailgate. I sped up to 65 and he remained burried up my tailpipe. Then he passed me on a double yellow line and cut in really close on my front like he was pissed at me because I wasn't breaking the law enough for his liking. He must have been going 80-90 after he passed based on the rate that he dissappeared from my view.

The world is filled with some very shortsighted, self centered, individuals.

What an assclown...if he is proven to have been drunk what type of jail time is he looking at? It's amazing that a drunk, no respect for the law local idiot gets "famous" for being on TV and the news titles the article "Chopper builder hurt in fatal crash" and not "Chopper builder recklessly kills someone".

What is amazing is that someone who builds bikes, and routinely rides them, would be careless enough to kill someone on a moped. I thought that bikers were more careful and looked out for other bikers while in real cars??

Tis true-I certainly became a more alert driver after having ridden my bike a few years...I also gave a lot more room/leeway to other bikers (even when in my car)

he didn't see the moped. He wasn't disrespecting the moped.
of course he understands what it's like to ride a bike.
He went over the double yellow, possibly while drunk.

I know he was hanging out with friends the majority of the day. He shares a duplex 3 doors down from my uncle. Saw him and his truck out front.

Here's Florida case law on DUI manslaughter so hopefully it turns out he was sober, I know it won't bring Jerry back but I would imagine it would be easier for his family to know it truly was an accident even a negligent accident then to know due to this man drunken alcohol intoxication they lost their loved one

Quote

Felony DUI – Serious Injury or Death
If a person is DUI, and causes or contributes to the cause of a crash involving death, the person is subject to being charged with DUI-Manslaughter. It is a second degree felony, level 8 offense, subject to 15 years in the state prison. The Florida Sentencing Guidelines apply. A single death carries a minimum of approximately 10 years in prison. There is mandatory permanent revocation of the driver's license

I pray for his family, as that's a terrible way to lose someone you love

A sad incident indeed- my thoughts go out to Gerry's family.

At least it sounds like he went quickly.

Passing on that stretch of road is dangerous.. even in the passing areas. My new rule is I'm only doing it (on the passing areas of course) if I really have to, and I'm never doing it in the dark regardless of whether its legal.

it's such a dangerous road. You get the extremes. The people who've lived down there a while who do everything slowly and the people who just moved down there or visitors who are still in highway/95 mode.
I could see this type of thing increasing with the crazy amount of new homes that have gone up the past 10 years.

Billy is a super cool guy and eveything he builds turns out to be way sick! Its too bad a his bad mistake took another life but mopeds on a major road like A1A ,are about as bad of an idea as drinkn and driving, especially at night time, and not to mention on a drunken holiday like Labor Day. I wonder if Jerry had been drinking too.
