It's the best day to remember a man, a devout man, a spiritual man, a courageous man, a man with flaws, a husband, a father, friend and a leader. He found himself at the head of a movement that needed him more than he needed it. He knew his life was in the same danger as many who were bombed, lunched, murdered and scared off. He could have taken his sabbatical and diluted his message. No one would have blamed him. His government was spying on him, his fellow southerners were plotting his murder and his family was also threatened. He prayed. He prayed in a jail cell he didn't belong in. He prayed for the strength to continue despite knowing that this world would have to continue without him and he would miss the future he was so instrumental in bringing about. He went to Memphis not to die but to be killed. This was a test of his faith that his body would pass but God given soul would be reunited with God And he would die true to his God. His death would prove his courage and provide a space for others to fill. His courage would be their example and his memory would be that of strength and non violence. He is my hero. Today, I remember my hero. Heroes are in short supply these days. Perhaps his example will provide us all with the courage to do what is right no matter what.
