Under the separated sovereigns doctrine, a state court can convict you for a gun charge which can be then prosecuted by the feds and subject to another prison sentence that begins after your state sentence.

Why now?

Its going to become a lot more important in the very near future because a certain money launderer wants to pardon his homies of their money laundering. The problems with that are that they have to be indicted first and that a federal pardon doesnt cover a state charge. Trump is seeking to issue full pardons for all crimes and have that mean that no state charges can follow as a result. He has some judges that owe him their position, but Judges are appointed for life and not subject to being pushed. The other problem is that prosecutors are a creative bunch when it comes to new and differnent charges for the same conduct. This should be interesting.
