Here is the link to the article: Florida Today

"Palm Bay police took Brenda Lee Maldonado, 33, into custody late Tuesday on one count of culpable negligence and one count of unsafe storage of a firearm. She was being held at the Brevard County Jail Complex in lieu of a $55,000 bond. Two days before Maldonado was in juvenile court, signing papers in her son's case."

Good on them for bringing charges, even if the punishment currently is not enough.

growing up I receive my fair share of grief for not closing the gate to our backyard which had an unscreened pool. My parents were afraid of a kid drowning, in addition to the horrible feeling of guilt, there are stiff penalties for negaligence.

these penalties(gun negligence) should be wayyy worse IMO.

Agreed.... especially if it involved permanent disability or death.

Name ends in vowel: maxx penalty.

If this happens to Stuart VanDerClub: his grief and loss is penance enough.

Well, that's one silver lining to this cloud of grief. Kudos to the PBPD for pressing this.

Still, I can't help but fear that follydude is probably correct. To many times we've seen a certain demographic's parents say "We had no idea. Oh he was such a good boy!" after the little monster has been building a damned arsenal in his room and documenting his sickness on social media.

A guy at works 12 year old daughter was bullied and ostracized on social media. She committed suicide. Her father wants to know why? who? what was said. what happened...

NO, the daughter has a right to privacy and so do the other kids, the dad does NOT get to see his own daughters accounts and has no access to where she was viewing or who she was talking to...

Blaming a certain demographics parents shows how much of an ignorant fuck you are...

A 12 year old has no right to privacy from their parents. It is a parent's job to ensure they know what is going on in their kid's lives to the best of their ability. Limiting access to social media, using parental controls, and monitoring online activity is part of that.

While I agree a 12yr old should have no secrets from her parents, the Dad had no reason to think she was doing anything wrong. AND she wasn't doing anything wrong. She was bullied by other 12 year olds (probably, can't legally find out what was said or by whom)

ARE the other kids PARENTS to blame for his kids suicide??? According to asshat They are a certain demographic who had no idea, their kids are such good little 12 years olds, after they're spewing their sickness on social media...

IF this guy can't find out anything about his 12 year olds web activities and can't find out about who they were chatting with... How is it some demographics PARENTS who are at fault when their teenager is posting shit somewhere on social media???

You might as well just post a picture of a bunny with a pancake on its head.

How can anyone be this obtuse and not be in some sort of assisted living program?

This isn't about knowing what the kids are doing. This is about securing the weapon.

Opening post is about someone that was rightly charged with failing to secure a weapon because her kid used it in a crime.

Comment about demographics was observing that some demographics seem to not get in trouble when their kids use their guns in a crime.

Issue there is that laws requiring proper security of weapons aren't universally or uniformally enforce.

It doesn't matter how or why the parent is clueless about their kid. Parent is still responsible for securing the weapons that the parent owns. Full stop.

And I think we're done here. Nothing more needs to be said.
